Westmorland Lookup Requests / Re: BEETHAM parish death look up

Hi Wayne,

Unfortunately, apart from the IGI, I don't think you will find any Westmorland PRs on the net. Even the IGI is very patchy in some areas. You could enquire at Kendal Record Office, who may give you 10 minutes free research time for a specific enquiry, or you could make an enquiry to South Westmorland Family History.

Good Luck

I suppose a quote for the research would be out of the question?!!

Hi,

After reading this topic, I'm just wondering if Andrea gets commission from LDS!!

With all due respect, to any unexperienced genealogist surfing the internet it would appear that you are suggesting that the LDS is the prime and best source of information. Admittedly, the IGI is an invaluable SECONDARY source which helps if you do not live within the research area, but the BEST & PRIMARY source has to be the Parish Registers.

According to the South Westmorland Family History website, there are hundreds of baptisms missing from the IGI for Kendal Parish, so ordering a film which may contain errors and omissions could well be a waste of money.

You may also be interested to know that baptisms were taking place in New Hutton as early as 1729 as per Holy Trinity, Kendal PARISH REGISTERS!!

Hi Vicky,

Firstly, in respect of the 1819 marriage, I suspect there will probably be another marriage in the Kendal area as I know from personal experience that there are a lot missing from the IGI.

I dont know how well you know Kendal, but the Parish of Kendal is extremely large (covering about 75 square miles), and when the IGI states Kendal it means the Parish of Kendal not the town of Kendal.

I would recommend that you find out exactly where the baptisms occured. If you email Kendal Record Office, they will undertake a small enquiry (10 mins) free of charge if you ask them nicely! You could then find out if they were living in the town of one of the many outlying villages.

If Michael wrote a book by hand it may suggest that he had been well educated. Do you know his profession or that of his father? Also, were Michael & Jane on the 1851 census?
