Im going to sit down with all this new information you two have kindly forwarded on to me and see what I can work out.
Thank you so much for the help ... I think I have a few late nights on the computer coming up !   ::)

Thanks so much for all the info Monica, I will keep plodding along and see if I can find anything else - I have spent hour upon hour searching for siblings of John but never been able to find anything! ... back to the drawing board  :-\

John has been so hard to trace - I have a copy of his death certificate, he died in Ballarat Aust in 1885, aged 56, it states 30 years in Victoria and his birth place in Edinburgh. I have heaps of information on his wife, but have never been able to find any information on the actual date John migrated to Oz or the name of the ship. I have searched the assisted and non assisted migrants as well as ships lists looking for him but to no avail. Its been like finding a needle in a haystack!

Thank you so much for the info - I have been searching for such a long time for info on Richard and Catharine but never been able to find anything other than their marriage record in 1812 on the LDS site !  I didnt pay the money to join ancestory.com because I thought it would be to no avail as I even contacted a scotish researcher a couple of years ago, only to be told she couldnt find anything on Richard & Catharine apart from the marriage I already had. I think that Adam is Richards brother, he had a son Adam Jnr that also came to Australia. Hopefully I can find a death or birth for Richard... thank you so much for your help  :)
