Lanarkshire / Re: George Henry Johnson (and Sarah Clarke)
« on: Thursday 10 January 19 20:31 GMT (UK)  »
An update on the original post. I have since discovered that George emigrated to the United States a few months after the 1891 census was taken. George arrived in the USA on the 5th August 1891. He dropped the surname Johnson and started to use the surname Leighton. He was joined by his wife Sarah and their 3 children, Julia, Mirian and Laura, in 1893.

I have since been in contact with one of the two people who matched both mine and my mothers DNA. They have told me that they believe Sarah left the United States within a year of arriving to return to the UK, leaving her husband and 3 children in Kentucky.

I now know that George married again the following year in Ohio to a Lydia Shorten. The marriage record stated that he was a widower. I could find no record of any death for Sarah between her arrival date and George's 2nd marriage, so perhaps Sarah did return back home.

I found a marriage for a Sarah Clarke in 1929, in Glasgow. It records her age as 61, so around the same birth year as the Sarah Johnson mentioned in the original post. On the marriage certificate it states that she was a spinster, there is no mention of a previous marriage. I am intrigued as it lists her father as a George Henry Clarke - Shoemaker and mother Annie Clarke (nee Lennon). I know that George and Annie married in 1853.

Lanarkshire / George Henry Johnson (and Sarah Clarke)

Whilst researching my Clarke ancestors from Armagh, I found an 1891 census record, for 83 West Street, Govan, Glasgow.

The head of the household is recorded as a Charles Henry Johnson, an unemployed litho artist. He is 27 (birth circa 1863 London). He is married to a Sarah Johnson, 23 (birth circa 1868 Armagh). As well as their children Julia Annie Johnson, Mirian Phoebe Johnson (both born in Nottingham) and Laura Amelia Johnson (born in Patrick), there are two cousins listed, Emily Clarke (a restaurant waitress born Armagh circa 1866) & Minnie Clarke (a milliner born Armagh circa 1868).

I searched for a marriage record for Charles Henry Johnson and Sarah. I found one in Belfast, date 29th November 1884. This is for a GEORGE Henry Johnston, 22, an artist, marriage to Sarah Clarke. George's father is also called George Henry. Sarah's father is a George Clarke, bootmaker.

If this is the right couple, Emily and Minnie would be cousin's of Sarah. Please note that I have separate requests for various Clarke information on the Armagh board, these are:

I ordered the birth certificate for Laura Amelia Johnson and it confirms that her father was George Henry Johnson, mother Sarah Clarke, marriage 29th November 1884.

I cannot find any trace of George Henry Johnson or Sarah after this 1891 census (or in any before).

Any help would be really appreciated in locating either George or Sarah.

Incidentally, i searched for Emily Clarke (one of the cousins mentioned above)  and found her in 1901 at 2 Hill Street, Anderston, Glasgow (also in 1911 at Lancefield Street, Anderston). She was married to a Nathaniel Campbell Dobbin. I found the marriage certificate that states that her name is Emily Maud Clarke, father Charles Mills Clarke - boot maker. The other cousin Minnie, her father was also Charles Mills Clarke - boot maker.

Both Sarah Clarke and Emily Maud Clarke appear in private member trees where both my mother and I have DNA matches with the tree owner, so I am particularly keen to explore this link further (I have previously messaged the tree owners but have no reply).

Hello, I looked at my old Clarke notes.

The Peter who died in 1962 had married an Eliza Jane McCullough on the 22nd October 1919. His father, John Clarke, was also a Bootmaker. He was living at 3 Barrack Street at the time of his marriage.

John Clarke married a Margaret Jane McBride on the 23rd April 1887. They had several children that I can see in the 1901 and 1911 census returns (including a Minnie, born 1894).

My original Peter Clarke, died on 23rd November 1886 in Callan Street. Death registered by his son Charles, of Scotch Street.

I am trying to work out how this Clarke family relate to my Clarke's (I have posted a separate thread about this earlier this year). I am sure there must be some connection, especially as you have told me he was in Scotch Street at the time of his death.

Hello Aghadowey, thank you for the replies, very informative as usual.

I had considered that she may have been born earlier, it does seem strange that her parents married in 1862 and that the first child I could find was born in 1869.

Elizabeth Yates was his 2nd wife, they married on the 28th March in 1878.

I think that the Clarke's were a Protestant family. I know when the son Charles Edmund married, is was in a Wesleyan Church in Glasgow. However, Minnie married her husband Robert Joseph Craig in a Roman catholic church.

Thank you so much for your help.

Stephen

Armagh / Minnie (Mary?) Olive Clarke

I am trying to trace a birth record for my great grandmother, Minnie Olive Clarke (I am presuming she would be a MARY Olive Clarke) who married Robert Craig on 31st December 1897 at St Patrick's chapel in Glasgow. I know she was born in Armagh but I am not sure of the date, from her death certificate this would appear to be in 1873.

Minnie's parents were Charles Clarke and her mother was Mary Ann Wilson. Charles and Mary married at St Mark's Church of Ireland in Armagh City on 20th April 1862. Charles was a shoemaker.

I have found birth records for all of her siblings (Herbert, born 27th October 1869 ((died 1887)), Charles Edmund, born 18th November 1871 ((died 1872)),  Charles Edmund Clarke, born 24th June 1873. then finally a Margaret Clarke on 21st May 1876 ((died in 1878 in Scotch Street, Armagh)) but can find no trace of Minnie at all.

Any help would be really appreciated. .

Caernarvonshire / Re: Jane Roberts b c 1854 Llaniestyn
« on: Sunday 21 October 18 12:08 BST (UK)  »
Update: I think I now have the right birth certificate.

Jane Roberts, born 18th April 1853, Tan Y Garog Dinas, Llaniestyn. Father is William Roberts, Labourer and mother, Ellen Roberts (formerly Parry).

I also then found the baptism record, which took place on the 15th May 1853.

I will search for the marriage of William and Ellen now.

Thank you everyone for your help.
