Down / Re: James Magee b1881 Co Antrim died 1926 Newry Workhouse.

Hi Aghadowey
I tried to send the pic but it wouldn’t upload, so here is the wording:
MAGEE: in loving memory of my dear mother Eliza Jane Magee, who died 4 May 1928, also my dear brother James who died 29th March 1926. Ever remembered by her loving son, daughter and granddaughter. 6 Erskine Terrace, Whitehouse.

Hope that helps!
Thank you

Not sure if I'm onto something or not but just in case it can help...

Starting with this newspaper snippet-
Frontier Sentinel, 24 Apr.1926: Mr. J. MAGEE, Newry. The remains of the late James Magee, Lower Water Street, Newry, were removed for interment in the “Old Chapel” Cemetery, the Rev. E. Campbell, … officiating. The chief mourners were- Margt Magee (widow); Elizabeth C. Magee (daughter) …

I found the birth of that daughter and was able to work back. However, several conflicting bits of information came to light (deceased also called John and wife was Mary- could OCR have inserted Margt for Mary?)
Elizabeth Catherine Magee, daughter of John Magee & Mary Conlon, born 4 Oct.1915 at 109 Canal St., Newry-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1915/01363/1562098.pdf
Note: all the births listed below also show mother's maiden name as Conlan.

Then I searched for other children of the couple and found these-
Gertrude Magee born 27 Nov.1904 at 109 Canal St.-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1904/01809/1708921.pdf
Died 24 Apr.1909 at 1 Barrack St.-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1909/05464/4529336.pdf

William Henry Magee born 27 Apr.1908 at 1 Barrack St.-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1908/01659/1661788.pdf

James Herbert Magee born 25 Jan.1911 at 1 Barrack St.-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1911/01543/1624942.pdf

Using the address from the 1911 birth I was able to find the family a few months later in the 1911 census-
https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Newry_West_Urban/Barrack_Street/254292/
All listed as Church of Ireland and James Magee born Co.Down. Married 8 years, 3 children/2 living (deceased child is eldest, Gertrude)

After quite a bit of searching I found the marriage- John Magee to Mary Connolly-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1903/10244/5728300.pdf
John's address is 109 Canal St. (daughter Gertrude born there in 1904 and Elizabeth in 1915). An Emily Magee shown as a witness. John's father called Alexander Magee, carpenter, so does this and 1911 census saying John born Co. Down rule out this one?
Thank you so much for your hard work! You’ve really looked into this for me. I appreciate it.
I did consider searching under John as an option however his father’s name was Benjamin so it has ruled out a quite a few marriages unfortunately.
This is proving a tough nut to crack!

Scotmum, clipping safely screenshotted.
Thank you so much!
Pretty sad to see sectarianism was rife back then!

As you say James died 26th March 1926, the following is unlikely to be him, given it was reported about a month later, but adding here anyhow, just in case, as you mentioned Downshire Court was on Water Street, and given my previous post re a Maggie/Margaret.

In the Frontier Sentinel 24 April 1926, there is mention that the remains of a James Magee of Lower Water Street, Newry, were removed for internment in the Old Chapel cemetery. Chief mourners being a Margt Magee (widow) and an Elizabeth C Magee (daughter). No dates given for death or removal.

The Sentinel was published weekly, on a Saturday.

Might be worth a quick check for other records of Magee on Lower Water Street, to see if this can definitely be ruled out.

Would have a look, but need to be somewhere shortly. I have sent a PM re the reports in Sentinel.

Many thanks Scotmum.
I just cannot find any possible Magees at all on Lower water street or Downshire Court in the 1911 census.
I can’t even find a possible marriage. I wonder if they were even legally married at all?
I’m baffled lol.
It is a possibility that this James Magee you mention was the correct one, but is it at all possible it would take a month for burial to take place? Sounds unlikely, but not impossible? Does it say where the remains were removed from? ( macabre, I know lol)

A James McGee, Crimean War veteran, of Water St. died in 1904-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1904/05631/4584418.pdf
Exact address is 44 Lower Water Street and informant was his widow Sarah McGee.
https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Newry_North_Urban/Lower_North_Street/1247345/ (James listed as blind)

He may, or may not, be connected to the James Magee buried in 1924 in "Old Chapel" Cemetery (widow Margaret, daughter Elizabeth).

What was listed as James Magee's occupation on his death certificate?
Thank you Aghadowey.
I know, for sure that he died on 29 March 1926 because I found a newspaper entry in the Belfast Telegraph whilst searching for another notice. It was put in by one of his sisters and I know this for sure as she included her address on the notice, which we have verified from many other records.
Additionally, his occupation on the death certificate is Labourer.
His last address before the workhouse is given as 1 Downshire Court, Lower Water street.

I had wondered if he was on the army but the death dates just don’t match up.
Thanks for your reply though. It’s food for thought indeed.

Not sure if this will be anything related

Antrim 1901 census for a James Magee in Windsor in Antrim.

https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Windsor/Charleyville_Avenue/965782/

It's not. This James was married to an Elizabeth with children Nora and Arthur and the family was CofI

Not sure when the change from John Thomas to James occurred.
A John Thomas had a meaning back then but not before 1860 of penis. So much so that my grandfather changed his forenames, by usage from John Thomas to Thomas McLean, well I guess not so much my grandfather but certainly my grandmother and mother had polite shivers when saying these names.......

Do you know what occupation James had?
Thanks for your reply.
Indeed, I did not know that John Thomas had that connotation way back then! That explains the name change I suppose.  ;D
His death certificate says he was a labourer. He died of bronchitis in Newry workhouse in 1926.

Greetings, Lis.

There was a Mrs Maggie Magee who lived opposite number 2 Downshire Court in 1921, according to a court report in the Frontier Sentinel of 9th July that year. The James Magee, also mentioned, apparently had a wooden leg. They had apparently lived there for 12 years. She was a Catholic, he a Protestant.

Other reports of a Margaret Magee, Downshire Court, involving drink and a donkey.

Greetings to you Scotmum. Nice to hear from you again. I hope all is well with you.
This sounds like a fascinating story! A wooden leg? A donkey?!!  ;D Please do give more details!
You say that they say they’ve been there for 12 years. I cannot see any Magee’s in Downshire Court in 1911 census. There is however a James and Margaret McCann.  ???
Would love to know more details from the Frontier Sentinel reports.
Many thanks :)

Hi
Thanks for your replies.
I haven’t managed to find James in any Uk census sadly.
Yes, Benjamin died aged 15 from TB.
I also can’t find any marriage in Ireland.

Hi
I am trying to find a marriage of James Magee who was born John Thomas Magee January 1881 to Benjamin Magee and Eliza Jane McConnell Co Antrim.
They were church of Ireland, however, many many years ago a now deceased relative told me that family lore was he had married outside his religion and been thereafter treated like an outsider by his family.
I did manage to find his death certificate. He died 29th March 1926 in Newry Workhouse, of bronchitis.
His marital status was “Married” and address as Downshire Court, Water St Newry. This is how I discovered he was known as James rather than John Thomas. I found a newspaper clipping inserted by his sister in his memory on the anniversary of his death where he is named as James.  I have also found an entry from a historical edition of Newry Journal giving his address as 9 Downshire Court Newry in 1917.
I would just love to know who he married and if the Family Lore was true.
