Thank you Stan.

I'd never  seen a licence like that and found it fascinating.  Didn't purchase one as it was one of many photocopies and I thought $15 was a little steep for half a sheet of paper.

Thank you for teaching me something new.

England / servant licence
« on: Monday 12 May 08 06:13 BST (UK)  »
Went to a local antique store and they had a photocopy of a servant licence for sale.  It was granting the person named to have the right to employ "one man servant"  The issuing town was Scarborough.  It was dated 1929

I found it interesting as I did not know of licences being issued.

My question is ....did other towns do this?

My grand mother and grand father were both in service in Yorkshire, probably around a similar time.

Here  is the back of the photo

Thank you so much for the clean ups.  I'll be saving them and printing them out as the original photo is only 4" x 2.5".  The improved versions are wonderful.

My mother thought this is James Willans born about 1817 in Batley, Yorks.  A confirmation of approximate dates would be appreciated, it looks like he'll be my first dead end as there is no father listed for him.

Thank you so much.

The local LDS history center is open tomorrow - so I'll head out and see what if anything I can find out.

I do have a silver tankard dated 1816 which suggests that one of the Willans was called John.

The inscription says
"Presented by J Nussey & R Sykes to John Willans as a memorial of his merit and integrity in his profession" "1816"

Don't know his profession, but most of the relatives were wool merchants etc.

I've found a reference in the IGI to a Sarah Willans with a father named John so I'll also take a look at that tomorrow also.

Here is a photo of James Willans - hope I can unravel his parentage.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Where do I go from here?

I was given a copy of a family tree and have been working through it confirming the information.  There is a gap in the tree the father of James Willans

James Willans born 1817 in Batley.  Mother listed as "Sarah" on the IGI

He married Mary Firth Dixon on 9th March 1843 - so I ordered the Marriage Certificate hoping to get the father's name - nada zippo that area of the certificate was blank.  The age on the marriage cert just says "full age" what does that mean?

Is there a way I can find his father?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

The ones I need to look up are all in Yorkshire and as I now live in Washington State its no longer a short trip for me.

Will the LDS places have the parish records? - I have one of their history centres not too far away.

I guess ordering certs is cheaper than a road trip for me!!!!!

Thank you I'll phone the register office before ordering - great idea.
