Australia / Plse save me from a costly mistake
« on: Friday 08 October 10 10:54 BST (UK)  »
Am I right in thinking that purchasing a death certificate from South Australia on line would cost me around £30 (inc postage)? If so, is there any way of checking a death certificate's details before purchase? I know how old the woman I am looking for would have been at the time of her death – is there any way I can confirm that before paying out a large sum of money for the certificate?
If anybody can answer my questions or give me some advice I'd be ever so grateful.

No, we don't know his name, I'm afraid - we're pretty certain he was a family member but how distant we're not exactly sure. The picture was found in the possessions of my wife's cousin's mother when she died - sorry, I know that's a little complicated.

Thank you all so much for your help and patience.

You've done a smashing job, Saddles, thank you again.
I'll follow up the RAOC suggestion, Rowley, I'm grateful. I very much appreciate your guidance, Prue ... and thankyou Pearl for your lyrical reply!!!

I'm afraid I don't have the photo but thanks for the advice, Jim. I didn't know that people clean up and restore old photos on the military site as well?
I know the picture is a little blurred but I thought the cap badge looked very much like the Royal Artillery badge.

I know this isn't a particularly sharp photograph but I would be extremely grateful if somebody could confirm that it was taken during the First World War and that the soldier is in the Royal Artillery? And is it possible to tell from the uniform which year it was taken in?
And if some clever soul out there is in a position to clean and sharpen it up I would be forever in their debt.
Thanks for looking - and hopelfully helping me out.

Hello Kev, would you mind checking if my great, great  grandafather – George Fogden of the 90th Regiment of Foot – was wounded in the Crimea? And also his brother Thomas – I have no idea of his regiment but I believe he served in both the Crimea and the Indian Mutiny. Thankyou for any information you can provide.

Thanks km, I'm very grateful.

I'm discovering more and more each day about my family in the 19th century and increasingly they seem to be connected with the armed services - something we never realised before. But to unravel just where they were, when and for how long and with whom appears to need a visit to Kew.

Trouble is, organising that is about as costly and complex as a military expedition ...

Just one other thing if you don't mind - does the fact that my great, great grandfather had an army pension indicate that he was invalided out of the service or were all soldiers at that time able to claim a pension?

Thanks so much Neil and everybody else who has responded. Is there any way I can find out about George's service – for instance when he joined up, what action if any he saw in the Crimea and when, and maybe why, he left the army?
