Hi Cherry Berry

If you are still able to do look ups would you be kind enough to look up Dilks, in particular Michael Dilks who died at Steam Brickyard Jarrow in 1869.

Many thanks

Try the Forum at mymarras.co.uk as there are a couple of members there who have researched extensively into Hepplewhite's in the North East.

Thanks Adamand, I can trace them back to the 1830's to Thirsk which is where Ann originally cam from.  She was the daughter of a publican too and I think Bewley came to work there and they married and then moved to Stanhope at the same time as her sister.

What I have been unable to do is trace the family down the generations, particularly the other descendents of Margaret Amelia.  I know where they all were at the turn of the century and a little later but then I become stuck.  I have even put an appeal into the Weardale Gazette in the hope that someone may recognise themselves as a descendent of any of the family but no luck so far.  Of course, there is a good chance that they all moved away so I may be looking in the wrong place.

Many thanks for your help

Hi Jean

Although none of mine were legally called Smith they were known as Smith and I think that they may have continued to use the Smith name.

Many thanks

Hi Marie

I have an interest in Weardale, particularly Crawleyside, Wolsingham and Stanhope.

My gg grandmother was called Margaret Amelia Rose and she lived at Crawleyside.  Her eldest three children were Jane (1858), George William (1861) and John Alfred (1862) (my g grandfather).  All three were called Rose.

Margaret Amelia then married a Thomas Moore in 1863 but he swiflty disappeared and she went on to have Frederick (1867), John Joseph (1871), Elizabeth (1876), Mary Annie (1880), Violet Ethel, (1883), Alice Amelia (1886) and Peter Smith (1888).  All of these children had the surname Moore.

None of the children had a father registered on their birth certificates but at least the last four belonged to John George Smith who Margaret Amelia lived with between at least 1880 and his death in 1901.  These four children were also known as Smith rather than their registered name of Moore.

Margaret Amelia's mother Ann moved to Wolsingham with her husband John Bewley in the late 1840's and  ran the Phoenix Inn in Stanhope for some time.  Margaret Amelia lived with her aunt Margaret Willey and her husband William who also had a pub in Stanhope after they moved there in the late 1840's.

Alice Amelia Moore married a John Watson Henderson and she died in 1951 at the Campbell Arms in Crawleyside.

Peter Smith Moore died in 1962 at Kell Cottage Crawleyside.

Apart from my direct ancestors I have been unable to trace any of my great grandfather's siblings and I would be grateful if you could help in any way.

Best Wishes

Andrea

That's brilliant, it confirms that Joseph was born in Derbyshire which is what I hoped.

Many thanks for your help.

Thank Sunflower.

I have just sent for Joseph jnr and Sarah's marriage cert today but you have confirmed it's the correct one as the spouse was Sarah Maria Barton so that's certainly correct.

Just need to find Joseph Senior's parentage now but although I think that he may have married Sarah Hison on 21 May 1823 at St Alkmund, Derbyshire that's probably not going to help me with his parentage!

Many thanks for your help it is much appreciated  :D

Sunflower,

That's definitely them, thank you so much - it also confirms that Joseph snr wasn't from Notts which supports my thoughts that he is my Joseph who was from Derbyshire.

Thanks you so much
