Inverness / Effy Gillies Portree Inv
« on: Monday 02 March 09 01:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am after some advice as to whether Im on the right track with this??
Im looking for children to Donald Gillies & Mary McKenzie of Invernesshire.
Ive found a Roderick Gillies on the 1841/1851 census in Portree & they came to Australia on the Miltiades in 1852.
Ive also found an Effy Gillies (same parents) born 1801 Portree on the Scotlands People Site.
Also a marriage between Effy Gillies & a John Campbell Snizort Parish in 1825.
I was wondering if there definately is a connection & if she migrated to Australia also?
I found an Effy & John Campbell on the Ontario 1852 but Im just not sure.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou  :)

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / William Roddis

Hello  :)

Would anyone have any information on this family?
William Roddis born abt 1795 he married Charlotte Capel (Cappell) who was born abt 1796.
I think William was a baker in Byfield, who may have gone bankrupt.
They had a son Thomas Roddis born abt 1821, he migrated to Australia but I cant find any trace of him getting here.

I have found a William & Charlotte on the Free BMD Index 1837-1983 in Rugby.

Appreciate any information

Cheers
Shaz

Hi Marie,

Your right! It is like climbing a mountain, Im certainly finding that out.
I get so excited when I find something..... I just want to find more!!
It seems the Roderick Gillies Im chasing emigrated here in 1852 due to the Highland Clearances.
He had some acres in Fearn Scotland & packed up his family & came to Australia at aged 52.
Now I need to find out what happened inbetween then & 1879.
Its all very addictive fun & frustrating  :)

Cando, thankyou for the links to the Miltiades Ship, Im not sure which the original would be either, theres a few dates on the pictures so I'll keep plodding along with it.

Great news you have added a little more to your history Cando with your ggg g'mothers grave, ppl certainly are amazing on here  :)

Thanks for that link Cando (your wonderful on here!)
I may be chasing the impossible but have read quite a few stories or diaries of other ships & voyages & was hoping there may have been similar on the Miltiades.
I have gone back to Roderick & Christina, trying to work out where they went & what they did when they arrived here in 1852.
Do you all ever get a completed story on your family histories?

Hello again all,

Just a quick update to fill you in on my progress.
A few months back I posted a question to get me started on my family tree & was overwhelmed with all the fast responses.
We were amazed at the generosity of the people here on Rootschat that went out of their way to get us started.
Well our tree has grown many new branches I think we have over 400 names now, & have learnt so much.
A huge thankyou to you all !!
My question (if I can ask another one  :) ) is about the ship Miltiades from Britain to Victoria Australia in 1852..... is there a story of this voyage anywhere that anyone knows of?
I have searched & dont seem to be able to find much about it at all.

Thankyou again for all your help
