Cheshire Completed Lookup Requests / Re: 1851 House of Industry, Chester

Thank you again Peter,

going to look through the other children of John and Sarah Bowen to see which would be the best birth certificate to send for and see if any of the addresses match those I now have for Mary Bithell.  John married Sarah Whitley in Caergwrle 1864, may have been there in 1861 which is why he's not with Edward and Mary.

You really are a star Peter,
regards,
Lisa

Peter,

if you have access to the 1861 Cheshire census will you look for Edward and Mary Bithell for me, they are still in Farndon in 1871, not sure what the address is, D? Bank, the reference for 1871 is RG10 3717 26a.  The older John Bowen in the 1851 died in 1855, Mary in 1875 and Edward 1877.  I have just sent off for the older Johns death certificate and Mary and Edwards 1851 marriage certificate to see if I can tie it all together, so if you don't mind looking for me, the 1861 census would complete the set and possibly give me any other children they had.

Thanks for all your help,
Lisa

Thank you Peter,

not only does that seem to fit but I have come across the mention of M Bethell before but without any relationship mentioned, could be Mary Bithell.  I will send off for the certificates and see, looks promising.

Thank you again for your time and help,
regards,
Lisa

Thank you for the replay Galante, this is the first birth I have come across without father details so wasn't sure, I have plenty of 'fibs' on marriage certificates, mostly ages though.

John married in Caergwrle, Flintshire in 1864, is still there in 1871 and then on to Birkenhead for the 1881, 1891 and 1901, though he must have kept going back to Farndon as his eldest three children were born there, my GGrandfather was born in Birkenhead in 1880, and my Nanna in Birkenhead 1924.

At the moment though I have nothing to link the House of Industry birth to my John BOWEN.  Oh well, it wouldn't be fun if it was easy.

Thanks again,
Lisa

My GGGrandfather John BOWEN was born c1842.  I have a birth certificate of a John BOWEN born 1May 1842 at House of Industry, Trinity Parish, Great Broughton to Mary BOWEN, (no details of father) and the informant is John ANDREWS, Master of House of Industry, Paradise Row.

In later census entries he lists his place of birth as Farndon and Chester.  Geography not being a strong point of mine would someone tell me if this corresponds with the birth certificate.

Also, his marriage certificate has his father as Edward BOWEN, labourer, his brides father being Edward WHITLEY, labourer, would it be possible, if father unknown, for him to have just used brides father's details with his own surname, rather than unknown (I have unsuccessfully looked for a Mary BOWEN marriage to an Edward).

And if anyone who has access to the 1851 Cheshire census is willing, will you look up the House of Industry and see if there is a John BOWEN, who would be about 8 or 9 years old please.

Any help or advise would be welcomed, thank you for taking the time to read this.

Regards,
Lisa

Somerset / Bartley of Shepton Mallet or Bridgwater
« on: Wednesday 16 March 05 23:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

one of my elusives is an Alexander George BARTLEY, depending on which census, he was born either 1828 Bridgwater or 1830 Shepton Mallett, I know nothing else apart from he had sons Alexander in 1858 London, then Joseph 1859 Northampton and Henry 1865 Birmingham, his first wife died before 1871 but I do not have her name.  Is Shepton Mallett and Bridgwater close enough to be classed as the same place as one got older?

Thanks and regards,
Lisa

Hi Ann,

if you get chance will you find out where records would be held for St Joseph's Girls Industrial School, Rusholme, looking for the records of Alice and Mary Campbell who are there in the 1891 census.

Thanks and regards,
Lisa

Thanks for that Bob, I have checked this and the sheet which would contain CAMPBELL is giving boys names!  I have been trying to find where Catholic records go as don't seem to be as widely available, though St Joseph's Cemetery were brilliant and not only sent me Alice's details, but details of everyone buried with her, one ow which was a Mary FORDY of Park St., Greenheys who died 1965 age 84, another long shot but could be Alices sister possibly remarried, looking through marriage index as we speak.

Lisa

Hi,

My Grandma was Margaret WEBSTER who married Alexander BARTLEY in 1943, born 1922 Victoria Buildings, Ancoats, she died in 1955, her older brother John died 1943 (unmarried) and there was a younger brother Colin who had died age 12.  Their parents were James Edward WEBSTER and Alice CAMPBELL, James died either just before or after Margarets birth (hearsay) but can not find his death.  Alice died 1963 and was buried St Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Moston, age 78, her death certificate has D WEBB, nephew of Park St., Greenheys as the informant.  James and Alice married 1911 at St Michael's RC, Ancoats and gave addresses as 79 & 81 Victoria Buildings, Ancoats, both fathers were William and deceased, James' father listed as a Carter and Alices a Seaman, one of the witnesses being a Margaret Campbell.

Two years on this is still the only information I have, Webster and Campbell being quite common names and having no idea of where they were from, births I can guess from the marriage certificate of 1882 for James and 1886 for Alice but census give me loads of possibles.  I have looked for the nephew connection and have found a Daniel WEBB born to James WEBB and Mary CAMPBELL who married 1912.  My Mum remembers Alice having a sister but only knew her as Mutsy and vaguely remembers her having twin daughters and a son.

One of the census possibles is 1891 St Joseph's Girls RC Industrial School, Rusholme.  There is an entry for Alice CAMPBELL, age 6, born Salford and above her is an entry for Mary CAMBELL, 9, Salford.  Long shot I know, but does anyone have access to, or knows where I would find any records for this school.

Thanks to anyone who took the time to read all this.
Regards,
Lisa
