Leicestershire / Soho Court, Melton Mowbray
« on: Sunday 10 July 11 16:25 BST (UK)  »
I have a Vine Guess living at this place in the 1851 census but all I can see in maps is a Soho Street .
What was Soho Court and was it in the area of what is now the street ?

Anyone know of good old street maps of Melton Mowbray ?

I have quite a lot of Spenceley/Spencely etc info and amongst it I have some Spencelayh records .

to add a bit more  there was an Edward Spencelayh married in St Hilda's church Middlesbrough 30th Nov 1868 and his Father was Robert Wood Spencelayh, a Mariner !

I've noticed that quite a lot of the Spencelayhs were Mariners . There were a William and a Phillip Spencelayh in the Middlesbrough area who were Mariners.

Many thanks mikeguess.  From time to time I believe there is a group of rootschatters who visit the local cemeteries and will take photographs.  As I am not in the U.K. I will keep the information you have sent me on hand for the next occasion.  Most appreciated.

I'll try and remember to photograph it next time I'm there !

Hi Philip

John George Porteous.  Died 27 May 1927.  Master builder and contractor.  Grand Master Freemason.

I'm sure there is a Porteous gravestone just up from the gates on the Acklam road entrance !

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Re: war memorial corner Gray st. and Feversham st

Anyone have any idea what happened to the war memorial that used to be at the corner of Gray St.  and Lower Feversham St. Middlesbrough.  I remeber it as a white/grey stone cross with a plinth the same colour and the names of the fallen, probably no more than 20 persons. I think it was behind a small curved iron railing and in the remains of the walls of St Peters church that had been demolished by enemy action.

could it have been moved to the church on Marton Road, St John the Evangelist ? I'll have to check again but I'm sure that cross is a war memorial !

Hmmm - tricky one that! They had no taste?  ;D

But seriously, I struggled like mad, in one census, to find one of my families who should, according to all other documents, have been in or around the Bedale area of the North Riding. In the end, I ran them to ground in the Tees Tilery area - Normanby/South Bank, where the head of family was working as a labourer in the iron/steel works. Ten years later, he had gone back to Bedale where he was, once again, an ag lab. Plainly the urban style of life didn't suit them and they were fortunate enough to be able to go home to start again.

Perhaps it was simply that they couldn't settle in a new place.

Jen

Don't forget that the Iron and Steel industry suffered several downturns when quite a lot of the furnaces where blown out so they would be no work especially for labourers. That would be a good reason to go back to where there was work especially if you had family there.

that's a strange number ! The map I have of Linthorpe Cemetery gives grave numbers of a letter then 5 digits ,
eg A10168

is the grave a Quaker burial ?

There's no Sarah Jones in the Marton churchyard, now to find where Ive put the Ormesby ones !
The Eston cemetery is quite large and I've only got older grave records, have you tried Redcar and Cleveland council for any burial records, not sure of the address for that department.
