Kirkcudbrightshire / What information is in the OPRs?
« on: Tuesday 13 June 06 11:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Just wondering if someone can tell me if it is worth looking at the OPRs on microfilm (LDS)?

I have two baptisms and a marriage all in film # 1068033 batch C/M 118744 Parish registers for Kirkpatrick-Durham, Kirkcudbrightshire.  The events I am looking for are baptisms 1830 & 1832 and marriage 1838.

Do they give any further information than is indexed?  Even the father/husband's occupation or whether people are from the parish or elsewhere would be handy.  Anything really as have hit not quite a brick wall, more like a brick labyrinth!

Thanks,
Ruth

Hi Casalguidi,

Thanks for looking for the 1841 census entry for me.  I think that's very likely to be my Samuels.  Am a bit sad that his mother wasn't in there, but... oh well.

I got excited when I saw that Anna Martha Meredith marriage a couple of months ago, especially when I looked up Anna Meredith marrying Samuel in 1847 on the IGI.  Unfortunately the record shows she married SAMUEL SOUTTER, 16 SEP 1847, Saint Paul, Deptford, Kent, England.  So close, and yet not my people.  The Samuel Bridgland from that quarter married Mary Fage or Reynolds

I have looked at the microfiche of BRI* births from about 1845-1860 and no entries for Phoebe or Harriet.  It wasn't a legal requirement to register marriages and births until 1870 or thereabouts so perhaps they just didn't.  I suppose I need to investigte parish records to go any further but genealogy has taken a back seat to other things at the moment so that will have to wait.

Now that the 1841 census is online though, I can see myself having a few days of obsessive Ancestry.co.uk activity.

Thanks again,
Ruth

Hi,

I had a look on Brian Lawson's site (www.lawsons.ca) on which he has transcribed the index to burials on the IOM.  Unfortunately your Thomas doesn't appear in it.  See http://www.lawsons.ca/burials/bur_indx.html for what is and isn't included on the index (perhaps he was cremated at Douglas or is just one of the "missing").  Or perhaps he was only visiting the IOM and was taken back to UK for burial.

Have you tried for a death certificate from the IOM?  You can apply at the IOM civil registry - http://www.gov.im/registries/general/civilregistry/welcome.xml

Cheers,
Ruth

You would need to look at the original registry entry for the marriage.  There are two sources:

- the 1911 Rolls Office copy (made from the original parish registers in 1911 to create a copy to be held at the civil registry) which is what the IGI is indexed from.  These are the microfilms referred to in the IGI entry, so for John Spence m Jane Beedon the source call no is 0106743 and this is the film to request from your local LDS family history centre to see this marriage entry.  Each of the baptismal entries will have a similar source call no.

- the original parish registers which are held by the Manx National Heritage Museum.  I believe with the exact date you can request a copy of the original entry, but they only accept pounds sterling so you might have to arrange an international money order or engage a UK genealogy researcher to submit the request for you.

The entries for these earlier events won't give you much extra information but will help you to confirm the names of the parties.  Keep in mind that in most cases the person themselves did not write down their own name and so errors can occur.  Given that all the children are listed with William Spence as the father I think it likely that the use of "John" in the 1797 marriage is incorrect, or perhaps there is a first name/middle name confusion happening.  I would be fairly confident that they are the same person - but you may never be able to prove it.

Hi Kim,

From looking at FreeBMD it seems the Thompson lead may be looking good.  Jane T in 1881 looks to be Jane Thompson Hitchings.

But on the IOM Eliza would still have been officially known as Eliza Kneale and I can't find her on the early censuses in IOM or Eng/Wales.  Unless her mother married someone else soon after she was born and Eliza took her step father's name.

I'm not sure what you can do from here.  Try posting a query on http://www.isle-of-man.com/cgi-bin/interests/genealogy/bulletin/index.pl as this is where you will find people who know all there is to know about IOM genealogy.

Good luck,
Ruth

My guess would be that William Spence came from somewhere else as there are no burials for SPENCE(R) before an infant Martha in 1809 (see www.lawsons.ca) and of those burials that indicate a date of death the earliest approximate birth date is 1779 (Margaret Spence buried 1846 aged 67).  The earliest legitimate birth entries on the IGI are William and Jane's children.

Pretty much the same thing with BEEDON - earliest burial is Anne (no age given) 1790 and the earliest that provides an age indicated an approximate birth date of 1779 (Edward Beedon buried 1819 aged 40 - probably son of Patrick and Martha).  The earliest legitimate birth entries on the IGI are the children of Patrick Beedon and Martha Munds/Muns/Munch.  No marriage entry exists for Patrick and Martha though both are in the burials index (Martha bd 1799, Patrick bd 1822).  Jane is not listed amongst their children but, if she is their daughter, perhaps she was born before the family arrived in IOM or perhaps she is Patrick's little sister or cousin etc.

Perhaps their families both came out when William and Jane were children, but I think it likely that neither was born there.  You would expect them to be on the IGI (most of the IOM is pretty well covered) otherwise.

I would suggest you check out all the entries for Beedon and Spence on the Island - IGI online, Lawsons.ca, also Manx Notebook (http://www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook/) and try to map out both families.  Also, do a search on the IOM genealogy message board (http://www.isle-of-man.com/cgi-bin/interests/genealogy/bulletin/index.pl). They are both uncommon enough for this to be manageable and will help.

Good luck,
Ruth

Hi Kim,

The IGI online is always the best place to start your search for IOM ancestors - http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true.  Also look at Brian Lawsons's site which has lots of useful indexes - www.lawsons.ca.

IGI gives an Elizabeth Kneale, d/o William Kneale and Margaret Quayle on 26 Aug 1842 in Ramsey.

Can't find any other children for William and Margaret.

William and Margaret married on 26 May 1842 in Maughold.

Which census is your information from?  I couldn't find her on the Island in 1851.  Only one Eliza Kneale born 1843 in Ramsey, but living with her widowed mother Ann (seems to be the family of George Kneale and Ann Corlett).

Cheers,
Ruth

Isle of Man Lookup Requests / Re: Kermode, Daniel b. 1837-1840 Miner

Hi Terry,

Catherine and Charles are living on their own in 1861:
RG9/4423, District 3, Folio 63, Page 8, Schedule 42
Ballagawne, Lonan
Charles Fargher, Head, Mar, 63, Carpenter, Andreas
Cathrine, Wife, Mar, 66, Lonan

Can't see Daniel or William in 1861 IOM or England/Wales/ChannelIslands.

I did find a Daniel Kermode (trasncribed as Rirmade) in Everton, Lancashire in 1861 but think he may be the son of Daniel and Eleanor as listed in the first post.  He is living as a boarder and working as a Joiner.  His place of birth is listed as Laxey and he is 24.

I think 1841 census may shed some light as we should be able to find Daniel s/o Catherine's father, but it won't be available for a while (though supposedly this year sometime).

Ah... now that I have posted all that info I think there might be a more likely candidate.    Here are the 1851 census details:

HO107/2524, District 3, Folio 443, Page 6, Schedule 18
Ballagawne, Lonan
Charles Faragher, Head, Mar, 52, Boat builder, Andreas
Catherine Faragher, Wife, Mar, 54, Lonan
William Kermode, Wife's son, Un, 22, Mining labourer, Lonan
Daniel Kermode, Wife's son, Un, 10, Scholar, Lonan

Daniel could be the son of a Thomas Kermode and Catherine ? christened 25 Oct 1840, Lonan, but can't find a match for William.

There is a further possibility in 1851 of Daniel Cormode b abt 1838 in Andreas to William and Jane (there is a brother John b abt 1842) but the father is a farmer.

Once the 1841 censuses become available I would be happy to check on any of these Kermode families.  Or you could ask for an 1841 census look-up from: http://www.isle-of-man.com/cgi-bin/interests/genealogy/bulletin/index.pl

Cheers,
Ruth
