Occupation Interests / Chinaman and Collector of Taxes
« on: Sunday 11 December 16 22:15 GMT (UK)  »
On the 1851 Census is a Thomas Goode whose occupation was shown as "Chinaman and Tax Collector".

Is a "Chinaman" someone dealing or trading in china and why would they also be a "Tax Collector" ? Surely there must have been a conflict of interest ? What sort of tax might he have been responsible for collecting ?

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Occupation Interests / Re: Excise officers
« on: Saturday 31 October 15 17:25 GMT (UK)  »
I have been reading this thread with interest and have seen the bhs project page. It lists the various stages an excise officer would go through in his career. Before I visit Kew to look at the records I would really like to know if my ancestor who, on his death certificate in 1838, was described as a "clerk in the Excise Office", would be in the records. The bhs list doesn't mention a "clerk" but does mention an "expectant" and "assistant". Maybe the informant didn't know the correct term to use and he was an expectant. Does anyone know if they used clerks who weren't training to become officers ?

His name was Francis Ross and he died aged 37, probably of TB.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Thank you, Nanny Jan.  You are quite right.  The roads aren't given their names and are just described as "Trevone".

Cornwall Lookup Requests / Trevone Bay has disappeared
« on: Wednesday 02 October 13 22:29 BST (UK)  »
I have just purchased an old postcard of Trevone Bay which was sent in 1904.  It says the sender lives in one of the houses in what is now Sandy Lane or certainly that corner.  I am trying to trace her on the 1901 and 1911 census but, strangely, I can't find any Trevone Bay houses on either census.  Can anyone help ?

Thanks.

Somerset / Re: Taunton Workhouse
« on: Tuesday 17 September 13 22:14 BST (UK)  »
I was trying to find 9 Trinity Terrace, where a relative died in 1925, and came across this old post.  Did anyone determine if this was the address for the workhouse ?

Many thanks.  That's a pity.  I will add it to my list of things to ask when I go to the Somerset Heritage Centre.

Census and Resource Discussion / Calendar of Wills 1537 - 1799 .... help !
« on: Thursday 05 September 13 22:55 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can tell me where I should look for a Will pre the 1858 National Probate Calendar ?  I have found the one I want (see below) but not sure if I can obtain a copy from the same probate office as you apply for those post 1858 Wills or if it would be in an archive somewhere.

John Shire, clerk of Buckland St Mary, Somerset, 5 May 1772, listed in Calendar of Wills, 1537-1799, and Administration in the Court of the Archdeacon of Taunton

Thanks for any help,
Simon

Somerset / Farm near Buckland St Mary
« on: Thursday 29 August 13 18:27 BST (UK)  »
I have a relative, Paige Shire, who farmed 100 acres of farmland at somewhere called "Swiss Hill Estate" on the 1841 census and, presumably the same farm, "Swiss Hill Farm" on the 1851 census - both Buckland St Mary. I was trying to find out where this farm is today, or even if it still exists, and came upon a farm near Buckland St Mary now called "Shires Farm" !  Is this coincidence or was the name of the farm changed to that of my relative ?

Does anyone have an old map showing where abouts "Swiss Hill Farm" was, as "Shires Farm" has a postcode of TA20 3RB.  I wondered if there was anyone on here who could give me any more information.

John 1765 Gamblingay Cam, married Sarah Dover 1790 Stotfold Bdf

-------------------

Next Gen:

John & Sarah Dover had:

John married Elizabeth, Maria married a Mr Parr (s/o a farmer), William married Esther Welch 1816, Fanny, Jasper, James, Aaron, John, Moses, Sarah married Neremiah Parry, and Elizabeth.

Hi An 65,

My wife's tree has a John Shaw with a wife called Sarah and sons including Aaron and Moses.  I have found a number of references on various sites to John having married Sarah Dover.  I appreciate the problems involved with identifying exact relationships with gypsy families and I can quite understand how places and dates fit to make something seem a good bet.  However, I wondered whether there was any evidence that this couple were Aaron and Moses' parents e.g. baptism records, wills (unlikely) etc.

Please don't think I doubt what you have is correct, I just wondered where I could go to find some confirmation.

Thanks, Simon
