Europe / Re: HARMES - german origins?
« on: Wednesday 14 December 11 18:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi again,

I've just remembered that I sent for a marriage cert ages ago now, for an Arthur Heinrich Harms (no e) and Marie Elisabeth Casanova.  The marriage was on 3 June 1912 in Isleworth, Middx.  Arthur's father was an Adolf, who was an artist. I don't think they are any relation to my Harmes.

That sounds pretty Germanic to me!  If the cert is of any interest, I could either send it to you or email it.

Regards

Christine

Thanks for your reply Carole.  As far as I can see there doesn't appear to be a link here.

My Harmes go back to c. 1710 with a Richard. There are then three more Richards until I get to Joseph who married Eliza Johnson in 1872.  Joseph was b. in West Molesey, Surrey (unsure of birthplaces for the Richards).

My maternal grandmother was one of 9 children b. to Joseph & Eliza.

However, if I could have a look at your Harmes trees I would be grateful.

Many thanks

Christine

Hello Carole

I have Harmes in my tree (maternal grandmother's name).  My Harmes were from Surrey/Middlesex.

Are any of yours from that area?

Regards

Thank you both for your replies.  The Registrars Office could make sense as my relative was of "no fixed abode", so maybe the Registrar's Office was then used as the address.

Having said that, 250 King's Road was given as the place of death, not as the address of the deceased.

Alternatively, as it was also a Chiropody School, perhaps he was having his feet treated, and he died!!

Does anyone know what this building was around 1928, as a relative died at that address.  Today it's a clinic called The Courtyard.  Thanks

Hi Richard

I saw my step sister in law at the weekend and asked whether she had contacted you re Newnham Murren.  She asked me to re resend your query, which I did.

Unfortunately she cannot help you but suggests that you contact the undertakers or sexton in Crowmarsh Gifford who may be able to help you further.  She didn't give me their details but no doubt you could find them online.

Happy hunting!

Canada / Re: Bushnell served in CEF

Thanks for your responses JJ & Valerie.

Just to put you right on a couple of points, Edward (NOK) was James nephew, not his father.

I thought he was in the Boer War as the Attestation Paper states that he had served in South Africa.

The most annoying thing about finding this recent information is that we have just come back from a holiday in Canada, if only we knew of this development a week earlier we could have done some research ourselves!

You have a wonderful country (even though we only saw a minute part of Ontario) and the people are so friendly and helpful.

I will probably send for the papers although I don't know that they will help me find out where James was from 1904.

Best wishes

Christine

Canada / Bushnell served in CEF
« on: Thursday 27 May 10 19:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi there, I have just discovered that my 2 x gt uncle James Bushnell signed up for the CEF in 1915.

A bit of background - James was born in Chelsea, London, UK in 1871.  He appears on the 1881 census, but nothing thereafter.  In a family birthday book is the entry on 4 April 1904 "Jim sailed for Canada".  I can't find him on any passenger lists but I have just found the Attestation Paper stating he signed up in January 1915 in Devizes, Wiltshire, UK.  He stated on the paper that he had previously served in S. Africa, presumably the Boer War.

So, James went to Canada in 1904.  He returned to England in 1915, or maybe earlier, but where did he live from 1904? I can't find him on the 1911 Canadian  census.  He was a labourer and was single when he signed up for the CEF.  I have found a death in Chelsea in 1925 which may be him.

Can anybody tell me where I can start looking for him please?

Hi, is anyone going to Westminster Archives and would do a search for me please?

Looking for marriage of Ann Bushnell to Thomas Trickey Davies in the March quarter 1873.

Any info found would be most appreciated.

Many thanks
