Antrim / Re: McDowell strays
« on: Monday 18 January 10 11:58 GMT (UK)  »
This is great. the name I am looking for was Ellen McMillan, McMullan or similar and John Sloan married in 1844 in Antrim.  Could this be William John? Certainly it is a name carried on into further generations. It also sits well with the time of other members of the family emigrating from the great happenings of Ireland at the time. I will investigate further and see what I can find.  I will let you know if there is a link.

I note that the witnesses at the wedding of your g grandfather's are William and Eleanora Sloan.  Do you have any more information about them?  I am looking for a John sloan from Antrim who is married to an Eleanora McMillan (or similar) I can't read the record clearly.

sorry to give the wrong meaning. I meant that on the census record of 1841 Catherine Brown is named as his wife.  This is not the marriage year

Thank you for your replies. I have the following information
living in Dalmeny 1829; Ratho 1838;  Kirkliston 1841living in Dalmeny 1829; Ratho 1838;  Kirkliston 1841
On his death certificate it names his parents as Thomas Guthrie,(by trade a Cooper) and Isabella Thomson, Thornton or Johnston. On the census records it confirms as in the death record that he is married to Catherine Brown and that he was born in Eyemouth. The only person which fits in Eyemouth suggest that his father is Robert Guthrie. There are other Thomas Guthries born 1801 in Berwickshire but census records show that they still in Berwickshire at the time when our Thomas was in Midlothians
All searches show that I have the right parents and this suggest that there may be a mistake on the part of the registrar or person completing dtails of his death.

On further research it looks as if she may have been another of Thomas's in-laws  Isabella Walkinshaw. who was born in 1852 in Berwickshire.

The only records I can find are a marriage of a Thomas Guthrie to Mary Aitchison in Coldingham in 1820. Given that Thomas was born in Eymouth in 1800 it seems likely that this is an uncle.
I have plenty information on his descendants but it is his parents who are causing problems.
Catherine was born in 1797
Further to this I have an Isabella Thornton married to a Thomas Guthrie. Their son Thomas born about 1800 married a Christian from Dunvegan in Skye!!!!!!    T  However in 1871 they are in Chirnside Berwickshire - she is 47 and he is 70.   This doesn't seem right as he died in Bathgate age 86.
The mystery grows

I have a Thomas Guthrie believed to be born 1800 in Eyemouth.   There seems to be different names given for his parents at different times.
Thomas is listed as married to Catherine Brown born in Linlithgow in 1841. No marriage certificate has been found.  Can anyone help

I am trying to find out some information about John and Robert Guthrie who signed the covenant and are known to be from Eyemouth.  If anyone has any information on them I would be grateful

I am interested in the Guthrie Family of Berwick. I wonder if anyone knows or can find out about 2 Guthry's who are on the Covenanters list of 1655 as born in Berwick.  My husband's family (proven) begins in Eyemouth about 1762 and it is likely that the above Guthries are related as many other members of our Guthrie family came from all over the area.

Berwickshire / Guthrie in Eymouth
« on: Thursday 14 February 08 14:15 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching the Guthrie family who are from Eyemouth and ended up on the Lothians and Fife. I have got back to Robert Guthrie 1763.  Before that it is difficult to prove connections though it is possible his father was John Guthrie.  However there is a John Guthrie listed as a Covenanter in 1655 and I would be very interested if anyone had information on him
Many thanks
