Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: 20 Nell Lane
« on: Monday 21 August 17 22:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I know the area very well and was born in Withington Hospital, my grandparents lived on Nell Lane too. I feel there isn't a really good explanation anywhere on the internet re Withington Hospital, Withington workhouse and 20 Nell Lane. Having done quite a lot of research on my family and extended relatives families too, I have found that there are 2 people in my tree that died at 20 Nell Lane. Neither were related to each other at all, dying 10 years apart there, one being a great uncle of mine, the other being an uncle of a cousins husband. So no relation at all.
I know that Withington Hospital was formerly the Workhouse, but 20 Nell Lane is the opposite end of the Lane to the hospital/workhouse. I think, especially having obtained death certificates for those that died and so seen what they died from,  that 20 Nell Lane was some kind of hospice, connected to the Hospital about a mile away.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Birstall or Birkenshaw?
« on: Monday 05 August 13 17:16 BST (UK)  »
I know this is a very very old post but I believe I may be able to shed some light on the original posters question.

You're all right really..I grew up in Birkenshaw around the corner from "Threelands".   When I was a child it was an old peoples care home known as "Threelands Grange".

The West Yorkshire Ambulance Service had their HQ in the original old house that was surrounded by a huge wall.. I havent been to Birkenshaw in about 10 years now but I believe the old peoples home was pulled down and a new housing area was built there.  I think the old house was taken down too.

My great great Grandmother, Isabella Briggs (nee Murray) was in service at the house in 1886 and when she left to get married she was presented with a bible by her employers Mr & Mrs George Ellison, I still have the bible and can photography the inscription if you like.

Anyway, I know quite a lot about Birkenshaw and so if you have any questions, I'd be only too happy to answer them or try to find out :)

Hi Jensav
I had forgotten I posted this original one!! Thanks for the info.
George Ellison was a cousin so many times removed, living in Threelands Grange which was  originally my ggg grandparents house. His wife was Mary and he died in 1896.
On old censuses the addresses were given as house names originally so I have a few names but don't know whereabouts in Birkenshaw the properties were. I will go and have a dig through masses of paperwork and check.
If you could photograph the inscription in the book that would be good, but how to get it as I cant put my email address on here?
I will get my thinking hat on again and let you know if any questions.
many thanks K

Hi Jutland 3
I have Francis Beaumont Ellison in my tree. He was my 2nd cousin 3x removed. He married Maria Hunter in 1900 and when widowed married her sister Barbara Hunter in 1922. His great grandparents were John Ellison and Hannah Wilkinson. They were my 4 x greatgrandparents.
I have portraits of both of them and other info.

Hi Dobfarm
thanks for the info re Birstall and Birkenshaw, it has been confusing but I will look at my info along with the info you gave me and see where I go from here.
Many thanks

« on: Saturday 19 September 09 12:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone
I have Ruane in my family tree, my mother in law was a Ruane from Lismulvee. Her parents were
James Ruane born 1876
Mary Connor born 1878.
I found them on The census, but cannot find any further info regarding Mary. James I have found on LDS site and I know that 2 of his sisters Maimie and another poss Catherine went to USA but they are proving difficult.
Does anyone know how I can find out how they got to USA and when?
James parents were John Ruane born about 1848 and Margaret Walsh. I would love find any info re John as at the moment I have nothing. How can I find a marriage cert for them
All these questions!!

thanks Barbara
On my grans marriage certificate in 1928 Joseph's occupation was a licensed victualler still at Wilmott st  and apparently another relative was born there in 1929/30. Unfortunately there is nobody to ask now to verify anything.

In 1906 when my gran was born they lived at 26 Devonshire st, that was a few roads along wasn't it? He was a tripe dresser then and had been since at least 1883 when he married his first wife. Bit of a swap of occupations! know which I would prefer

Clossicks went to USA I think because they had a son Sonny born 1910 ish,  who died 1994 in missouri usa. does anyone know anything about these 3 people? I am having great difficulty finding anything out about any of them!
please anyone can you help?

Mayo / Re: Durkan and Kolic/Colic/Cholic? Poss. hamlet Nr.Swinford?
« on: Saturday 23 February 08 19:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone
my partners family are the Durkans also from Killaser Mayo.
We visited the house where they were all brought up and it is a shell with another house now built next to the derelict 'shed' that was home.
His father was Patrick Durkan born 1917, son of Martin and Mary Cassidy both born 1875 ish. Their other children include Martin,Thomas,Michael,John (the last two moved over to Manchester Uk along with Patrick), sisters Margaret who also married a Durkan from Rubble Mayo, Eileen, Sarah (Sadie) and Mary who is a nun in Chile.
There is no other info on Martin and Mary in Killaser, the census return shows too many to know who is the correct one..
if anyone out there has any info or ideas where to go next I would be very grateful

Thanks Karen
