Surrey / Re: ASHBY - BATTY marriage, did it happen?
« on: Sunday 01 June 25 17:06 BST (UK)  »
Thanks again, confusing

In conclusion are you suggesting Mary Ann Ashby m John Batty? 23 Jun 1835 Kensington as John Batty and Mary Ann ASHLY  (he d Mar qtr 1843 Marylebone) a plasterer

sons:

Charles Ashby Batty bap to John & Marianne! d 1842 Marylebone aged 0
& Thomas Edward Batty b 1843 also to John & Marianne! Batty d 1843 aged 6 months,
No children soon after 1835? until 1841 6 years later

If (assuming all this is correct) and she lost her husband and 2 children in 2/3 years perhaps that's why there was no mentionof kids in Mary Ann's later life as Mrs Haines or in 1851 when she was living with her 3 sisters.
But no mention of them as a family in 1841 C?

Who was Charles Batty d 1843 aged 20? b 1823, 8 years younger than Mary Ann b 1815

Did she m in 1835 or was she still single as in 1841 C?

Thanks

Whether she m once or twice, this must have happened between 1841 if that is her in 1841 as Mary Ann ASHBY aged 25? and 1851 when she was a widow as BATTY. She m W T Haines as Batty

We have checked for 2 possible ms by linking her name Ashby with others in the St Pancras area 1841-1851, then linking poss 1st ms with Batty in the same area, same date - Nothing

If she was not recorded on the 1841 C then she may have m before 1841

Surrey / ASHBY - BATTY marriage, did it happen?

Hi

Mary Ann ASHBY was b poss 18.9.1815 Marylebone, London, dau of poss Thomas Ashby & Jane Roberts m 19.5.1808 St Mary, Marylebone, London

In 1851 as Mary Ann BATTY, she was a widow living in Marylebone, London, with sisters, Catherine, Frances & Dina ASHBY - all Dressmakers; the 3 sisters were single

As such, despite a good deal of research, we can't find a m for her with a Mr Batty

In 1854 (no full date unfortunately) she m (2) William Taylor Haines at St Margaret, Westminster.....

This may be Mary Ann in 1841 as Mary Ann ASHBY, residing in Grafton Place, St Pancras, aged 25, with a Joshua & Martha Thonston - no details on Family Search

Any assistance as to her 1st m will be gratefully received - did this m result in any children?

Rhanks all for your reserearch

A nuisance that the newpapers are more keen to tell us the date of their report rather than the date of the Marriage. However it would seen to have been 28 Dec 1861 Wesleyan Chapel, Stamford, Lincs
I think Frederick Joseph Bell was possibly illegitimate or fostered by Massey Cross & his wife Elizabeth (nee Meadows) though he never appeared with them on the 1841 C (aged 12) I have neen unable to find his parents

Mary Ann Short's father was John a Farmer/Farrier

At their m on 6.7.1848 F J was recorded as 32 so b @1816, she 21, he a Porter, she a Servant, her father John a Farmer, his, Massey Cross a Porter. In 1851 C, Fred J was b @1828 Wisbech/Whittlesea. In 1861 he was b @ 1828, so m age was more like 20 rather than 32!

Death date unknown - last time recorded 1901 C in Clee with Wheelsby aged 79 - a 1903 d fits but that F J B was aged 0!

Hi
Frederick Joseph BELL & Frances RANBY marriage 1861/2
Some confusion as to the date this couple m - BMD has Dec qtr 1861, Family S has Jan 1862 but no specific date (marriage notice Event date 2.1.1862 Lincs Chronicle)
Perhaps if anyone has access to this newpaper, a date could be confirmed
As always we are grateful for any assistance

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Penelope, Catherine, Elizabeth & Anne MARTIN

You (We  :))have  done a lot of work on this Martin Family.  I presume you do have some of the wills? Many are free at the National Archives

I began this Tree last year, then returned ro it this year. I have asked the questions I have because, I have for a second time failed to find the answers. The Tree is large with most of it done by me with limited searching facilities, hence my approaching this site for help. I'm not quite sure why you make the comment above?

I have downloaded some of the Wills, not easy to read. This Family were not always keen to subscribe to the Censae which makes it more difficult, These Wills only assist to an extent and don't answer b/m/ dates etc etc

The Obits, Newpaper articles etc are more important to this Family Tree and I have no access to these

Thanks all for your help

Apologies for being in the wrong County, James being MP for Tewkesbury (only 1 of many Martins), we considered that he had a place there & some kids were b & bap there

An excerp from a History this family

The second son of James and Penelope was Joseph, who got married to Sarah Harrlet, daughter of Robert Hewit, Esquire of Whitehaven and the third son was James who on September 20, 1819, got married to Julia Vignoles, daughter of Reverend John Vignoles, from Portarlington. The daughters of James and Penelope were Penelope, Catherine, Elizabeth, and Anne

James was apparently a friend of William Pitt the Younger, though political opposites & had a house in Downing Street next door. I don't know for how long or any dates

All baps as you say need to be checked

Catherine/Katherine was b 8.6.1781 in Downing St - is that right & bap 6.7.1781 there privately. I did note somewhere (perhaps FS) that she was bap in Worcs Cathedral. Can you tell me where she was bur?

Anna Martin b/bap 22/6/1785 Downing Street d 4.2.1839 Norton House, Bredon, Worcs. Is that a bap or b? Can you tell me where she was bur?

You stated Penelope Martin bap 10/10/1777 d. 27/10/1870, yet also stated was "Her will is on Ancestry. 1840" She was a spinster of Norton House in the parish of Brendon Norton, Worcs. Burial register says Norton House.
Did she therefore d 30.1.1840 Ledbury, Herefordshire (as FreeBMD)? & then bur in Norton?

Bredon has a famous tythe barn, which I once had to survey as a student!

World War One / Re: F V H NEWICK & F M TAYLOR Leicestershire Regiment

Thanks for your replies

I thought "Menrtioned in Despatches" meant he had done something courageous rather than just mentioned as a fact in a record
To be mentioned in despatches a soldier or officer usually had to do something really useful to help the operation to achieve its aim. It didn't have to involve heroism or courage. In fact at the end of a campaign it was frequently the case that the MIDs were somewhat akin to an Oscar acceptance speech, in which the great and the good are thanked.

I see very little "thanks to F M Taylor for his ervices......." in the record dated 1920 above!!!!!! so for me reading that I would be none the wiser

He was conscripted into the Army presumably after May 1916 (as a married man). Beween then & 1918 (ref the Absent Voter List) nothing appears to be known about his time in the Service. My late father knew almost nothing about his father's war service, but he did mention to me Salonika, Quarter Master Serjeant and mentioned in dispatches - 2 of those have been found to be true, so........
