Australia / Re: Sydney Suburb
« on: Tuesday 25 March 14 02:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Debbie,
Palmer Street is in the suburb of Darlinghurst. I think that in 1909 Sydney was a lot smaller than it is today, and "everyone" knew where Palmer St was. The street runs at right angles to Oxford St, and runs down to Woolloomooloo (which, of course, means that it could be the suburb of Woolloomooloo, if the address is at that end of Palmer St  :P).
Cheers,
Jude

OOPS!! Thanks Ros, I really should have said that I would PM her, but was at work, and in a hurry. Happy for you to "butt in"" with info at any time.
Thanks again.
Also, thanks Kat for the info. I'll be in touch with you, certainly.

Hello Kat,
What a lovely surprise!! I'm afraid that I haven't progressed at all with my McKechnie ancestors. It is lovely to hear from a relative. I'd love to hear about the family, if you could help me. As I originally said, my Dad wasn't a well man, and he, for some reason, refused to talk about his family at all, even becoming angry and aggressive if my Mum spoke about her family (and she did, often!!).
So, my grandfather Norman, was Malcolm's youngest son; it appears that I omitted Harry in my first post, sorry about that! Please feel free to PM me , and I'll be happy to let you know about our small branch of the family.
Thank you very much.

Australia / Re: Depression - Cook Park,Brighton le Sands
« on: Tuesday 06 March 12 10:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Neil,
I used to play golf at New Brighton, which was originally called North Brighton. The more experienced  ;D members, told me that the club land was taken by the Federal government to extend Kingsford Smith airport. The Government gave them land out at Moorebank (near Liverpool), and money to build a course. A few years ago, there was an anniversary, and they were all reminiscing, and , apparently, some part of the old clubhouse (in ruins) still exists.
So, North Brighton would indeed be in the Kyeema area, maybe even over the Cooks river.
Cheers, Jude

John Simpson Robbie is my gg grandfather. He came to Australia aboard the "Anna" in 1855. I am at work at the moment, and don't have all the info at hand, BUT..... if you check out the Monaro Pioneers website, you will find a lot of very useful info there. It is mostly about J S Robbie, and his descendents, but you may find it of use.

Loved it!! It's so much better when the person isn't afraid to show thier feelings, and gets right into it.  Magda is a very popular woman, and the episode was great!!.
I couldn't believe it was an hour, either, as there were only 2 ancestors shown.  Not a criticism, both ancestors were fascinating, time just flew by!!

Hi Jeff,
If you check the National Library of Australia's newspaper library site, you can login (it's free), and search for people and things.  I did a quick look and found 2 articles about a divorce for this woman, in 1923. I didn't have a chance to look in the personal columns for her death announcement. it's really good.

The Lighter Side / Re: For Remembrance Day
« on: Wednesday 10 November 10 01:16 GMT (UK)  »
Remembering: John A McKechnie, killed at Pozieres, 23-25th July, 1916 (exact date not known). Initially listed as missing, found in 1923, and buried at Flers.
George Rutherford Buchan, killed at Bullecourt, 11th April, 1917.  He has no known grave, he lies near Riencourt.
John Jack, a cousin of George Rutherford, I have only just found out about him, and, since he enlisted in Scotland, I don't know which unit he was with, or the date of his death.
Glenn Morton McKechnie, an able seaman aboard HMAS Sydney, 1941,  his grave is the ocean off the West Australian coast, the wreck only found last year.
Don Mckechnie, George Nickolas Sparks, William Buchan, John Buchan (my Grandfather), the other 2 Jack cousins- thank you, for signing up to those dreadful wars, for us.  Bless you all.

We WILL remember them......
