Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: William Woodcock (Barnsley, b. 1841)
« on: Saturday 18 September 10 10:10 BST (UK)  »
Hello EBCH
It is interesting that WW lived next to JW and they "swapped" sweep jobs.
They MUST be from the same family but I haven't tied things together yet.
Do you want me to let you know what I find?
I think I have solved WW's genealogy.
William and Anne (nee Hazle) were married in Barnsley in 1823. They MUST be related as Martha Hazle is down as WW's aunt in the 1851 census.
I believe WW was born illegitimately to their daughter Elizabeth. She and WW were living with Martha Hazle in 1841.
I have WW (senior) as being the son of Joseph W and Sarah Burgan.
Thanks again for your input.
Bill

Dear Jackie
Thank you for your astonishingly quick reply.
Yes, that is the right family. John Willey Mountford Woodcock arrives on the scene in 1875.
I may have the answer, in which case I apologise for your wasted efforts.
In 1841 there is an Elizabeth Woodcock (aged 15 but was actually born in 1824) on her own with a 6 mth old baby, William Woodcock (oh dear!). There is a 65 year old Elizabeth Woodcock in the same street (?grandma). Her immediate neighbour is Martha Hinzel (probably aunt Martha again!)
Methinks something has happened to William and Anne as their other daughter Sarah (aged 15) is living on her own in a weaving house by the look of it. I can't find them on any census at all.
Thank goodness for Aunty Martha, she seems to have devoted her life to looking after other people's kids.
Incidently Sarah Bell seems to have been orphaned by the age of 3.
I will keep digging.
Thanks again for your efforts.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / William Woodcock (Barnsley, b. 1841)
« on: Thursday 16 September 10 15:22 BST (UK)  »
I have traced my wife's family back to the aformentioned William Woodcock, who is the one who married Hannah Horbury in 1861.
He seems to be living with his unmarried aunt, Martha Hazle, in 1851 and 1861 (along with her other nephew, ?James Wermell? and her niece Sarah Bell)
There is a marriage on the LDS site of William Woodcock and Anne Hazle in 1823.
Is there any way to confirm that they are William Woodcock's parents?
I could not find a birth record on LDS for him.
I have sorted Sarah Bell back to her grandmother, Mary Hazle (Anne and Martha's sister?).
No such luck with James Wermell, in fact no luck at all with him.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

George Cox is on 1841 Census, aged 30 (HO 107/1127/8) living in Lea Marston with Elizabeth Walker 15 (whom he later married) and Catherine Harvey aged 35!!!!
In 1861 (RG9 2188) he and Elizabeth have 2 sons George (b. 1847) and Edward (b. 1851)
George Junior has left by 1871. I have a different RG number and can't find any Henry or Sarah Brigden.
In 1881 (RG11/3052) they are still living with son Edward.
In 1891 (RG12/2440) George is widowed, he and Edward have a servant Mary  A. Green.
Is this the same family as yours?
Hope this helps

Do you know which records office holds the Guisboro archives?
I agree that is my next step

Yorkshire (North Riding) / William Winspear and Isabella Toes (Bachelor)
« on: Saturday 20 September 08 10:54 BST (UK)  »
Bear with me!
Isabella Bachelor (Born in Whitby) Married my wife's great great Uncle George Lewis Toes. He died in WW1.
She then married (as Isabella Toes) William Winspear in Guisbro in 1918.
I want to find out more about William Winspear and whether he is related to other Winspears of Whitby.
I have drawn a blank, can anybody help?

My Grandmother Esther Parkes (nee Bustard) was born in Altnapaste in 1914. I have traced her family back to George Bustard born 1812. Can anyone help me go back any further? I live in Yorkshire, England.

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Re: George Hodgkinson (b 1848 Burslem)
« on: Tuesday 26 February 08 20:54 GMT (UK)  »
It is possible that George and Narah are living together in 1871 as Fordgw and Sarah Hodgkinson even though they don't marry until 1874. Their children Harriet and George (Fordgw) turn up in 1881, Harriet with George and Narah, George with Grandma Caroline. It definitely looks like Sarah on census though. Still it explains why George is not widowed on marriage cert, and why George and Narah otherwise disappear in 1871.
Good thinking!

His Wife Narah is also missing in 1871. I can't find her anywhere. She is living with parents Caroline and James in 1861.
Interestingly in 1881 Caroline is remarried (James died in 1864) to John Key (Rey). She is living in Newport (341 Watery Lane). There is a grandchild called George Hodgkinson b. about 1870, but no parents. Could this be a child of George and Narah from before they were married? If so where are they? My brain is beginning to hurt so if anyone can help point me in the right direction it would be great.
