OP - did you check the baptisms of all the children of Thomas and Bridget?
Her surname varies for each child. Therefore, may not have been Cosgrove.

Hi again, thank you for all your help and suggestions.  So far, I haven't found a baptismal record for my John Barry born in Ireland in 1820-21.  That is why I wanted to verify if the baptismal record for Nicholas Barry in Wexford may have been connected to John's parents. John Barry & Bridgid Cosgrove.   As you pointed out, the surname Cosgrove, has been recorded under numerous variations like Corcoran, Cosgriff, Cosgrave etc.  However, I do have DNA matches to surname Cosgrove, who also have Barry surnames, although very few.  John Richard Barry (my John's uncle) emigrated first to Newfoundland, Canada in 1812, and in 1815 later moved to Prince Edward Island in the Egmont Bay area.

Irish families tended to emigrate to areas where other Irish settlers or relatives had previously gone before them.  There was a large Irish settlement in Hope River, PEI and a John Barry was listed there as well as Cosgrove surnames.  In my great-grandmother's obituary there also were Cosgrove pallbearers:  Page 3, col. 5 There passed away on the 21st Nov. Mrs. John Barry, at the advanced age of 92 years. The deceased, who lived for the greater part of her life in Wellington, was well known for her many virtues. She leaves to mourn their loss four sons and three daughters: Mrs. Elizabeth Allen, Boston, Edward Barry, also of Boston, and Mrs. D. F. Botts, Bloomfield. The sons are Thomas Barry, Bangor; John, Sydney; Richard in the Western states; and Frank at Wellington. Her funeral took place at Wellington amidst a large concourse of people who came from far and near to pay their last tribute of respect to one who had lived so long amongst them. A Solemn Requiem Mass was sung by her pastor, Father John, for the repose of her soul. The pallbearers were Peter Walsh, Austen Cosgrove, J. T. Ayres, Martin Condon, F. G. Arsenault, and John T. Cosgrove.
The difficulty with trying to find the correct John or Richard Barry is that they are two of the most common names in all the Barry families.  We do know that the father of John Richard Barry and Thomas Barry was RICHARD. That is mentioned in the letter that Thomas sent to his brother John Richard Barry when trying to make arrangements for his son, John, to join his uncle John Richard Barry in PEI.

As for the Wills, the names Edmund, Thomas, David etc. seem to be associated with the Tallow Barry families.  However, it doesn't contain any additional information regarding spouse, family etc. At least that is what I interpretated from the Irish Wills source online.

When the early Irish families emigrated to Canada, especially PEI, the priests who recorded their baptisms, marriages etc. recorded them as they sounded to HIM  I have an Elizabeth *? unknown ancestor married to a Thomas Murphy.  It has been recorded about five different ways but I am pretty sure it is Meehan/Mihan or Nihan.  I also do have unknown DNA connections to Meehan, so that is most likely  For example, this is one of them:  Margaret Gaffney (born Meehan)

I also found this:  Thomas Murphy was born in 1795 in Callan, Kilkenny, Ireland. He had one son with Elizabeth Mihan in 1815. He died in 1881 in Prince Edward Island having lived a long life of 86 years.

You are much more advanced in your genealogy expertise and knowledge than I am.  I only do it for personal reasons but do want to know WHAT is right not who.  I certainly appreciate all your input and information.  The more I find what is correct will certainly help eliminate more unknowns.

I have a larger unknown DNA match to a PATRICK Barry, (1820-1897) born in Ireland and died Syracuse, Onondaga, New York, USA.  His wife, Mary J. Whalen, could also be Whelan. 1793-1880, Birth 1793 • Ireland, Death 1880

https://www.ancestry.com   According to this researcher, her husband, Michael Barry shows a large DNA match to me on Chromosome 19.  However, we can't make the connection.  So, you solve one mystery and another one shows up.  Best Regards and once again "THANK YOU."

Link for one set of previous posts on Barrys of Tallow, Co. Waterford.
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=718647.msg5635679#msg5635679

From the details in those posts, it is clear that they can't possibly be the same family as the Rathangan, Co. Wexford Barrys.
I am very sorry if my post has upset you.  When I posted the orignal queries about the Tallow baptisms, I was not aware of a Nicholas Barry.  As I stated in my post I was confused as I knew that my line, Thomas and Bridgid Barry lived in Tallow and I have their marriage details and baptisms of other children.  I was just trying to verify if this Nicholas Barry baptism in Wexfored may just be a coincidence having the same parents' names.  This is the record for Thomas and Bridgid (Cosgrove) marriage. Since we don't know where Bridgid was born, I was thinking it may have been Wexford after seeing the baptism for Nicholas there.  Marriage Record for Thomas Barry  & Brigid Cosgrove/Cosgrave
Date of Marriage:  July 12, 1818
Place, Tallow, Waterford County, Ireland
Religion, both Roman Catholic
Witness 1    Joanne Cosgrove
Witness 2    Mary Healy
Officator, Foran, N.
Place, Tallow, Waterford, Ireland

So very sorry for taking up your time.  Sometimes elimination is the only way to find the correct ancestors.  So thank you for proving that these two couples are different from each other.  My apologies.

Oh Goody!
 Thanks
Maggsie
I just found a link that my ancestor, Thomas Murphy may have also been from Wexford.  Until lately, we thought he was from Callen, Killkenny, Ireland.   See:  When Thomas Murphy was born in 1815 in Coolroe, Wexford, Ireland, his father, Thomas, was 20 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 35. He married Mary Ann Reilly and they had ten children together. He also had one daughter with Mary Murphy. He also had one daughter from another relationship. He died in 1900 having lived a long life of 85 years.

So now, I am not sure whether I have the right Thomas or not.  Apparently his father, also named Thomas was married to an Elizabeth Nyhan, Myhan, Meehan????   I also have Barry and Cosgrove ancestors with roots in Wexford, Ireland.  I live in Prince Edward Island (PEI) Canada.  My other Irish surnames are Barry, Collins, Costin, Cosgrove, Lane, Larkin, Mansfield, Meehan?, Murphy, Power. Quinn, Reilly, Sullivan and McCausland   Thank you, Spuddy.

Hi Michael:  Noticed your post and wondered where that area was in Ireland.  It isn't very far from the borders of Tipperary and Waterford.  My Barry ancestors came either from Tallow, Waterford, or Wexford.  Have you a GEDMATCH #?  If so, please send it to me by email to *and I will run it against my Gedmatch #.  My great-grandfather was John Thomas Barry born in 1820 to Thomas Barry and Bridgid Cosgrove.  His siblings were Elizabeth, who married a Noonan and they moved to Boston, USA.  Another sister was Mary (no more info on her) and three brothers, Richard, Francis and Nicholas.

Nicholas Barry bapt 29 Mar 1823 Wexford, Rathangan, Ireland
son of Thomas & Bridget Barry

I can't verify that these are my 2nd gt-grandparents but it fits the time period.  Anyway, if you would like to exchange Barry information, I would be very glad to  help you.  Thank you and take care.  I live in Prince Edward Island, Canada (PEI) and my Irish surnames are Barry, Collins, Cosgrove, Costin, Lane, Larkin, Mansfield, Murphy, Power, Quinn, Reilly, Sullivan and McCausland.  The majority of my Irish ancestors came from Waterford and Cork. Thank you,
Spuddy

Thanks, I am a member but not knowing what part of Scotland George may have come from makes it difficult to zero in on.  I spent about an hour earlier this evening going through some of the searches on the archives site. Thanks again.

Thanks for your reply.  Our elusive George was also a Paymaster under Lord Rollo's British army when they were fighting at Louisbourg, Quebec and most likely PEI, (Acadia at that time period.)  His list of effects after his death in 1804 contained many items that he most likely was a store owner.  He also had two or three red English military uniforms.  He was educated as he could read and write, so he must have been of upper class upbringing to have an education during the mid 1700's

However, we couldn't as of YET found any military record although somebody said the a paymaster wouldn't be classified as being a military person.  He also had ships built in PEI and was a ship owner. I keep getting DNA matches to Hunter and some Patterson surnames so was hoping that would lead me back to Penman.  A William Hunter was a neighbour to George Penman in Lot 13, PEI. There is an article on record at our University of PEI, which includes our George Penman at:  http://vre2.upei.ca/islandmagazine/fedora/repository/vre%3Aislemag-batch2-559/OBJ

We don't know the relationship to George & David Penman but we do know that they both named two of their daughters, Elizabeth and Jane.  That is why I was so interested in this post as the naming pattern was so similar.   Is that site you mentioned free or a payment one?  Thank you for your comments, it is always good to view other people's hints and comments.  Take care, Mary Cudmore
