Hi Kriss

Thanks for your reply, you have been an immense help, I had my great grandmother down as Ellen Jane Williams Probus 1854 and her father John Williams coming from Falmouth (1832) and her mother Eliza James (1832)from Calstock. When I checked my grandad's birth certificate his mother was down as Ellen Williams so I never checked out the possibility of another Ellen Williams born Probus for the same year. So it seems that I have been on the wrong tack all this time. Since I received your reply I have checked back on the census records and have found Luke Williams on 1861 Census where you stated and found his date of birth 27 9 1812 (Gerrans) on LDS also his father and mother, same source along with 2 brothers born at Gerrans.  So thank you for your monumental help. ;D ;D ;D

As to George I had came to the same opinion that he was either not James son or he had been born before they married and been given his mothers family name.  :-[  As to James and Ellen as he is listed as a Merchant Seaman it is possible they could have married at sea or at least by a sea Captain, but where do you start looking for that ? ???  Marriage certificate would have resolved these problems .  The search goes on.  Can't thank you enough for all your help  :-* :-* :-*

Just did a quick search and fond 3 James Hill born at Portsea between 1856 and 1873 and did the same for Ellen Williams same area and came up with 6 matches for 1856 -1873. so its probably safe to say they are not my James and Ellen who married at Portsea

I Have copies of both the 1881, 1891 & 1901 Census returns for James Hill when he was living in Plymouth, though it does not show a George Hill on the 1881 census he could have been staying at his grandparents on the night of the census, he is present with he rest of the family on the 1891 Census.
James is shown as a Merchant Seaman on the 1881 census so it is possible that he was still a seaman and got married some 10 years later in Portsea Hampshire, the question is why would they travell all that way just to get married. I Suppose they could have moved from Plymouth to Portsea and then moved back again  between 1888 and 1890. They lived at the same address on both 1891 and 1901 census.

I have been searching for St Breock Parish Births/Baptisms but can't seem to find a site that has any listed. Did find one for grave stones but this did not help as the person I am trying to trace was born at St Breock but died in Egloshayle I think. He is listed on the 1881 census as John S Hill Born about 1833 his death was registered in the Bodmin area Q4 1899 vol 5c page 54. have tried Cornish OPC and also LDS still no joy can anyone suggest where else to look
