Hi all,

If you are still out there I would like to get back into this. Mum is now 91 and I'm feeling that my last link to Dad will die with her (even though he is actually buried 3 kms from me!).

Now that this site has reactivated me (did not pick up on change of email - or I missed an activation one. Who knows?!) I'd like to get some more info.

Please feel free to contact me.

Thanks,
Trisha

Hey - Trish is here!

I've been quiet cause I seem to meet dead ends. It looks like things may get interesting again, which is great.

Am at work at moment, but feel free to leave messages!

Cheers,
Trisha

Hi Margaret,

You are a doll! Anything you can find is greatly appreciated.

I slowed down a lot on this side of my family as I just can't get enough info to guide me. All the other sides of my family I can get back to the early 1600s, so if I was doing "Who Do You Think You Are", then the Griffin chase would be the theme for my show!

So, I guess that I am saying 'Yes, please!' to anything you have, and anything you can find on John's parents.

Cheers,
Trisha

My thanks to both of you!

Sorry, wasn't trying to sound like I was whingeing about the records - it's just that I know I can only go so far using the Internet, rather than the excitement of a physical chase.

How I believe I'm related:

Father - Billie Grenfell Griffin born in Beverley (1916) of Ernest Griffin and Alice Beatrice Griffin (nee Proctor)

Grandfather - Ernest Griffin born Walkington (1887) of John Griffin born in Denton and Elizabeth Griffin (nee Richardson) (born in Beverley)

Great Grandfather - checked 1861 census and followed John to Old Farm House in Stilton, where his parents were Thomas Griffin (born in Stilton) and Anne (?) (born in Deeping St James)

Great-Great Grandfather - checked 1841 census and followed Thomas to Fen Street in Stilton, where his parents were Robert Griffin (born in Stilton) and Elizabeth (?) (born in Stilton). Your mention of Robert Griffin marrying Elizabeth Ruff fits in with the census that has a 15yo John Ruff living at the same address.

Thanks for the advice, and I'll continue my hunt for identity!

Cheers,
Trisha

Huntingdonshire / GRIFFIN - Stilton

G'day,

I've traced my Dad's family back to Stilton, and the 1841 census shows a Robert Griffin (40) with wife Elizabeth (35) and child Thomas (10). They lived in Fen Street.

Two questions have arisen:

1. Where do I go from here, especially in regards to getting info further back?

2. Am I likely to be still related to the Griffins currently living in Stilton?

It's such a pain living so far away from all those records  . . .

Cheers all,
Trisha

One Name Studies: N to S / PAYNE / PROCTOR - Buckinghamshire
« on: Monday 28 January 08 19:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

My father was born in Beverley in 1916, and his name was Billie Grenfell Griffin.

His mother's name was Alice Beatrice Proctor (b. 1890 Hitcham, Suffolk) and father's name was Ernest Griffin (b. 1887 Walkington, Yorkshire). He also had a brother Eric, born in 1920.

Now, family lore say that Dad had a favourite Aunty named Pat (my namesake) who married Ernie Payne of Chalfont St Giles in Bucks.

The problem is that there is no Pat in the Proctor line, and I am now suspecting that maybe one of Alice's sisters changed their name to, or just wanted to be known as, Pat? Or, maybe I have the wrong Alice Beatrice Proctor with those birth details (a strong possibility?)

For some reason, Dad just didn't talk about his family, and everything we know has been gleaned from letters from Alice over the years. (Why did he run away from England and come to Australia? Again - didn't want to talk about it)

We have tried writing to Pat and Ernie's son, but he didn't seem interested in providing details, so we have left this alone for over 20 years.

So now, the time has come! As keeper of the family tree, I need to get this info, so if anyone has clues and/or directions, please feel free to give me a holler.

Cheers,
Trisha

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / GRIFFIN - Yorkshire

Hi all,

I have a quandary (don't we all?!) - my father was born in Beverley in 1916, and his name was Billie Grenfell Griffin.

His mother's name was Alice Beatrice Proctor (b. 1890 Hitcham, Suffolk) and father's name was Ernest Griffin (b. 1887 Walkington, Yorkshire)

He also had a brother Eric, born in 1920.

My quandary is that I have come to a dead stop with Ernest. On the marriage certificate his father's name is shown as John, but I can't tell which John it is in the censuses (censi?)

Any directions anyone can give me?

Cheers,
Trisha

Pam,

I don't know whether the word 'WOW!' fully relays the way that I am feeling!

Do we know how far back the Sanders line goes? I'd like to know whether we made some mark on history - besides ensuring that Kenton will never be devoid of Sanders.

Muchas gracias, danke schon, and you beauty!

Cheers,
Trisha
