The Common Room / Genealogy link - HARRIS / REED
« on: Friday 17 May 13 10:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I'm a relative novice to family history and need clarification on a possible relationship. I recently received a email out of the blue from an experienced researcher in USA stating that he is my cousin. I don't fully understand the exact relationships between family's (e.g. cousin to uncle, cousin to 2nd cousin).

I attach a simple family tree for my family and Mark Reed.  Could someone please clarify exactly what relationship, if any, Mark is to me. I believe that my Abraham Harris is a first cousin to Mark Reed's Abraham Harris.

Hi Pels

Thanks for the advice.  It's the first 1911 census record I have looked for so I didn't know that child deaths were recorded.  I'm pretty sure that they would have married in Bilston as several generations of the Harris clan were born/died there.

I thought of finding the marriage details and then searching for a Harris death between that date and 1911 as the death would almost certainly have taken place between those two dates.  What do you think of this for starters.

I'm keen to find out more if I can as I have never heard anything discussed in the family about a third sibling in addition to an Auntie and Uncle.  I suppose this is one of the interesting things about family research is finding facts that are not immediately apparent.

Hi all

Thanks for your help.  Unfortunately I have a very common family name, Harris, which probably makes searching more difficult. I'm somewhat of a novice in family history research.  I'm a bit perplexed as to why a dead child is recorded on the census form

Here is the link to the specific document. Any help or guidance in researching this further would be appreciated.

Staffordshire / 1911 census

Hi all

Have just printed out the 1911 census record for my grandparents.  The record lists a child who was born alive, shown in the census as now dead but no name or date of death.  Any suggestions on whether further details can be traced from the scarce information given?

World War One / Cirencester Red Cross Hospital
« on: Thursday 29 April 10 16:29 BST (UK)  »
I have recently been fortunate in obtaining my grandfathers WW1 Service Record.  Most of the documents are somewhat charred around the edges but at least they survived the WW2 firebombs when other records were completely destroyed.  I know from childhood memory that my grandfather had a bullet wound in his right foot which is confirmed from one of the documents I have been able to download via the Ancestry website.

Amongst the various documents I have obtained is one which refers to Cirencester Red Cross Hospital dated 1918 where I assume my grandfather was treated so I have been trying to ascertain whether there are any surviving records anywhere relating to this hospital and my grandfathers hospitalisation.  Initially I contacted Gloucestershire Archives. They do not hold any records but suggested I try the British Red Cross Society who say that The British Red Cross Museum and Archives do not hold records of patients but that archives relating to soldiers who served in wars in the 20th Century are held at the Movement's headquarters in Geneva.

So, I have been in contact with the latter who tell me that the ICRC do not keep records of the Red Cross Hospitals but it was the British Red Cross Society which was in charge of such hospitals during WW1.  At the moment therefore it appears that I am at a dead end which I suppose is not unusual with Family History research.

Can anyone help on this subject please?

Family History Beginners Board / Re: FRANCE: French connection

Hi Jorose

Firstly, small apology but I gave you a wee bit of duff information in my posting yesterday due to misreading Mary Hill's wedding certificate. I gave her fathers occupation as miner but it was in fact moulder.  Thomas Hughes, Mary's husbands father was the miner.

Now, many thanks for the information on Charles Hill.  I think you probably have the right person from the 1841 census because of them living in Hallfields. Several generations of the Harris family and also associated relatives (Hughes etc) lived there (Hallfields no longer appears on maps due to redevelopment decades ago). The info about French employers hiring English workers would explain why Charles Hill as a moulder was living and working in France at the time of Mary's birth in 1826.  However, Mary isn't listed in the 1841 census at which time she would have been 15 years of age. Could have been staying with relatives perhaps ? The other factor that makes me think you have the right Charles Hill is that there were other children born in France. Plenty for me to go at. I will have contact in June with a French couple visiting a neighbour.  I'd planned to ask them if they would be willing to do a bit of research for me when they get back to France.  Looks very much like you have narrowed down the area of search.

Kind regards
Royston

RoDe you are a star  ;D  ;D  ;D

Only reason it's taken me so long to respond is that I had a quick look and couldn't tear myself away.

Some of the info was on the old site but there is lots of new stuff with loads of detail.  Found additional info on a number of rellies already.

I'm very familiar with the E & S but don't get it here in Yorkshire.  My uncle used to work for them and I once had a tour of the place with a friend.  Back in the old days when they still set type...

Hi Dudley
Until I saw this posting I didn't realise you lived in Yorkshire.  If I can do anything in the Bilston area for you please ask.
