London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Rufford Row Islington
« on: Sunday 05 July 15 20:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi Jenny

What an interesting reply you got from Trystan.   I would just like to add:  I have a newspaper clipping regarding a Great Grand Uncle Henry Smith that was murdered in 1896 Islington.

Copied from the Newspaper:
Most of the inhabitants of Upper Street Islington, remember when the strip of ground lying between the Unitarian Church and Cross Street was known as Rufford's Row and was numbered 1-15 counting from the end towards the 'Angel'.  This row of shops had then a raised pavement some four feet above the road way running in front of them and it was about were 296 Upper Street Islington now that about forty years ago Mr. Smith was in business as a Gas Engineer at No.11 or 12 Rufford's Row. This is clearly established by Mrs. Bland who remembers being taken there as a little girl by her mother.

I hope this is some help to you.  Oh and Mrs. Bland is Henry Smith's niece.  The newspaper was dated Feb 1896

Essex / Re: John Pratt born Weeley1840??
« on: Tuesday 09 September 08 22:23 BST (UK)  »

Hi Ninky

I just came across your post regarding John Pratt.  Did you manage to find his birth index?.

I am the 3x Great Granddaughter to (I believe) his Mother Caroline Pratt.

Caroline had an illegitimate Son John Pratt b.abt.1842 in Weeley.

In the 1851 Census Caroline and John were living with her parents William & Elizabeth Pratt.

By 1861 Caroline and her son John were in the Tendering workhouse, it also seems her sister was there too with her illegitimate daughter Julia/Julie (b. 1851 Weeley) in the parish of Tendering.

Caroline went on to marry John Southgate Webster.

Hope this has been of some help

Kind Regards

Tralena Mason
