madhatter,
I am not sure if you will see this but,
looking on familysearch I see the marriage of a Thomas Jennison and Rachel Slater 13 May 1776 in Rudston rather than Ruston Parva (Rudston looks to be about 5 miles NE of Ruston Parva).

There are 3 possible christening records for Thomas that I can find:
21 Jun 1742 in Beverley (about 23 miles South of Rudston) Father: William Jennison3 Feb 1747 in Foston on the Wolds (about 10 miles South of Rudston) Father: Robert Jennison, Mother: Frances
30 Aug 1749 in Hutton Cranswick (about 14 miles SW of Rudston) Mother: Ann Jennison

One of whom may also be the father of my John (Sarah Jennison late Saxon was also married to a Thomas Jennison but I cannot find a marriage as of yet)

Hope that helps,

Ian

Hi Mark,

Yes, following the information I received here I managed to get much further with the Wells side of my tree including finding a few more researchers looking into this family.

I currently have identified Henry's Parents - Henry Wells and Maria Dawson and his maternal grandparents - John Dawson and Elizabeth Green, a link to the Rugeley Poisoner and many family members not included in this thread.

I also have some possibilities for the Wells side of the tree that I have yet to confirm.

Elizabeth Wells (1848) is one of my maternal GGGrandparents so I am very interested in taking this branch of my tree further. What information do you have? PM me your email addy if you would like to continue by email.

Regards,
Ian

Hi Andrea,

Yes, Eckington gave me a whole wild goose chase for a while, my Grandfather has Jane's birthdate as Feb 17th 1865... according to FreeBMD Eckington comes under Chesterfield, Derbyshire and I can't find any female Seller(s)/Sellar(s) there in the right time period.

I even tried all Jane Ann's born in Chesterfield or Whitby for the time period and looked for a marriage to a Sellers on the off chance that Hannah Mary's birth was "legitimate" with no joy either on FreeBMD or the LDS Data.

William & Jane Ann Jennison are two of my maternal GGGrandparents and you are right, I need to bite the bullet and order these particular certs.

Could you tell me where to find the address for the Stockton local office please?

Thanks again for all your input,
Ian

I may have found Henry on the 1861 Census after all... at RG9 3656 6 8 working as a servant in Danby - Henry Sellars born in Aislaby... which is the same birth place the 1851 Father - John has.

What I don't understand... as yet... is if this family spent most of it's history in the North Riding of Yorkshire, why is the marriage recorded in Stockton? would their marriage certificate tell me exactly where they were married?

Hi Andrea,

yeah I know... welcome to my research world  ;D unfortunately I don't have any of Grandad's sources... I suspect that back in the 60's he did most of it by visiting the local records offices and the like.

As far as I can see, the connection is the eldest daughter on the 1891/1901 census for the Jennison family: Hannah Mary born in Durham Stockton 1887/8. I have searched FreeBMD and the GRO Indices available through Ancestry and I can't find a birth for Hannah Mary Jennison, however there is a birth for Hannah Mary Sellers Q4 1887 Stockton Vol. 10a Page 56. Which might explain "Jane's" change of forenames. Incidentally, the male Jennison children mostly carry Jennison family names, of the girls, there is this Hannah Mary and a Lillian Jane.

Also, the most likely candidate for the birth of Mary/Jane/Ann that I can find is this one: Mary Jane Seller Q1 1865 Whitby Vol. 9d Page 392... The Whitby Reg. District includes Egton, which, phonetically, isn't a million miles away from the "Eckton" recorded on the 1901 census as her birthplace.

I have looked at the 1901 James Sellars, in 1881 that family is living in Attercliffe and I can't find any likely place links as yet.

Naturally, I can't trace this Henry Seller on the 1861 census either... can you see him at all? in 1851 he appears to be at HO107 2375 37 2, the son of John and Hannah Sellars and born in Sleights. His mother Hannah was born in Egton....

I have tried GenUKI for the various place names, most seem to be in the area of Guisborough & Whitby, as far as "Jane" goes I can't find Ormshead but Ormesby includes the village of Eston (Eckton?), also Easington (Eckington?) Parish includes Boulby. Skelton in Cleveland has Boosbeck, no joy with Lamps Land, Harbourn Dale or Rayth, though Whitby parish has Raithwaite and Iburndale. Whitby also includes Sleights (1851 birthplace of Henry Sellars).

I haven't found Lidnham in Norfolk either making Henry's wife Hannah no easier to trace...

I think you're right on the certificates, it may be my only other source of information to help clear all this up... or muddy the waters even further

Thanks for your help, I'm hoping that this family will be the one I am looking for

Ian

Andrea,

great find thank you!!! Henery, Hannan & Mary Ann would certainly explain why I have had no joy in tracing them on the census's  :D

I don't have the certificates as yet, it's a bit expensive ordering speculative ones from here in the US.

The census entries give me whole new bunch of information to go on though... had no idea that Hannah was (potentially) born in Norfolk.. and I have Mary Jane Ann's birthplace as Egton... and a quick lookup hasn't helped me find Lamps Land yet

Thanks so much!!
Ian

Hi,

I have hit a complete brick wall in my research, I am looking for any other information on the following marriage:

Hannah Ayton to Henry Seller Q4 1863 Stockton Vol. 10a  Page 91

According to my grandfather's research, these are the parents of Mary Jane Seller whose birth is Q1 1865 Whitby Vol. 9d Page 392.

However I am having no luck in finding any of them on the census or any other on-line resource I can find, until Jane is married to William Jennison (Q4 1889 Great Ouseburn Vol. 9a page 131) and then on the 1891 census (Class: RG12; Piece: 3765; Folio 117; Page 2) by which time she is using Jane Ann as forenames.

If anyone can give me more information or suggest somewhere else to look I could really do with the help.

Thanks for reading,
Ian,

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / 1841 Census Tipton lookup - Mills
« on: Monday 17 November 08 03:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to trace the family of Abraham Mills, born 1829 in Tipton. By the 1851 Census he is married to Eliza (nee Fleet) and living in Tipton HO107; Piece: 2029; Folio: 383; Page: 22.

Searching the IGI I have found the following:

IGI Batch No.: C010093 Tipton, Stafford, England
Parents:
Father: EDWARD MILLS
Mother: MARY

PHEBE MILLS      Christening: 27 OCT 1816
MARY MILLS      Christening: 07 MAR 1819
JOSEPH MILLS   Christening: 17 JUN 1821
JOHN MILLS      Christening: 28 DEC 1823
WILLIAM MILLS Christening: 30 JUL 1826
EDWARD MILLS Christening: 25 NOV 1827
===================================
IGI Batch No.: C010094 Tipton, Stafford, England
Parents:
Father: EDWARD MILLS
Mother: MARY

ABRAHAM MILLS Christening: 06 DEC 1829
===================================

However I can't find a likely marriage in the IGI for Edward Mills to a Mary in the vicinity so I am hoping to find their approx. ages/birth county from the census details.

Any help in finding a second source of information is much appreciated.

Thanks for reading, Ian
