couple of extras in case anyone still interested:
Mary Ann might have come to Australia on her own as Annie Reynolds on the Waipara: http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/Researchers/ImmigrationIndexes/Documents/Assisted-Immigrants-1848-1912-R.pdf leading to http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/Researchers/ImmigrationIndexes/Documents/Waipara_1911_Jan_to_1911_Jul_QSA_Item_18490.pdf
It's just a guess but is really the only one that seems to fit all the dates.
Also, Catherine Martin was fiesty! She took the mining company to court:

Almond Valley Heritage Trust: Museum Scottish Shale Oil Industry: e.g. court case re Edward Reynolds’s death: http://www.scottishshale.co.uk/KnowledgePages/Accidents/NewspaperRecords/News1890s.html#NewsAccidentEdwardReynolds1898
Also re my post in reply 41, I was meaning to quote from reply 8 rather than the one I did. I wanted to know if James was related to Edward and thus to me too.
I think Hugh Rafferty might have married Catherine's sister Margaret and become Edward's and Catherine's brother-in-law that way. I've also seen an idea that Margaret later remarried a Michael Kidd. I'm not sure of any of this yet. I know I'm slow.
Thanks again all.

Just going back over the old post - Hugh Rafferty did marry catherine's sister margaret martin and then later married michael kidd (in 1899) after hugh died in Aug 1897.

There is a Hugh Rafferty that married an Annie Reynolds in Aug 1890. I can't find a connection at this point to my reynolds/rafferty family. This particular hugh, his parents were Annie Donnelly and James Rafferty and Annie Reynolds parents were Mary Bell and James Reynolds.

Hugh Rafferty that married Margaret Martin - his parents were Patrick Rafferty and Elizabeth Cassidy.

Margaret Martin/Rafferty/Kidd died in Jan 1916 at Broxburn.

I can find all this information for other relatives but I can't find the necessary info for my direct ancestors.

Trying to find Edward Reynolds (1865-1896) parents - im guessing they were in Ireland and only Edward was in Scotland - Edward Reynolds and Agnes McGee.
Agnes was deceased at the time of Edwards marriage to Catherine Martin in 1888.

Sorry for the rambling. Just thought I would provide a little update.

Thanks :)

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone that has helped me out. All the tips have been fanstastic and I now have another direction to follow and an extra line in my tree. I have holidays next week and I can't wait to start searching.

I have found a few things on rootsireland but wasn't sure if it was worth buying credits for the details. I have over 100 search credits?? with this site but I haven't purchased other credits yet to view the data. I think I may do so for future searching.

Thanks for the links. I guess I will order the certificate and hope for the best. Thomas and Ellen came to Australia and even on the death register here there is no mention of Ellen's parents names. I believe Thomas' parents were John Shanahan and Margret Obrien/brien/brian.

Hi,

Wondering if anyone could help with some details for the marriage of
Thomas Shanahan and Ellen Ryan in Kilcommon, Tipperary?

I have been told they were married on 25.11.1879. I am trying to find out the names of Ellen's parents - a stretch I know. If anyone has any information or could assist in anyway, I would be forever grateful. I have been hitting my head against this brick wall for some time now and really don't know which way to turn.

Thanks in advance.

I have just re-read some documents on my grandfather - William's son - and he states that his father (William) was born in Dublin. Not sure how true this is either, but I will see what I can find...i feel like I am going round in circles and coming up with zilch....

Hi Shane,

Unfortunately all the information that I have is what I wrote in my first post. I have not found any other siblings in Australia - I guess there is every chance he came over by himself...he would have been early to mid 20's.

Thanks for posting those links - I am trying to find out as much as I can about researching Irish roots and so far this site has been amazing.

I wondered the same thing about the place of birth - unfortunately this is all I have at this point. Perhaps if I could find his shipping records, this might provide me with more information.

Thanks once again

I have hit a brick wall with this family and any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
My Great Grandfather was William Henry Fowler. He married in Australia in 1912 and according to his marriage certificate he was born in Queenstown, Cork and his age was 27 (b. approx 1885).

His parents are listed as Thomas Fowler (occupation: Printer) and Margaret Scott.
There is a discrepency between the marriage and death certificates for his birthdate of 2 years. So I believe he was born between 1883-1885 - approx. His death certificate also states he had been in Australia for 10 years.

1. Would anyone be able to shed some light on when/how he came to be in Australia - I have not been able to find any shipping records for him.
2. Can anyone confirm exactly where in Ireland he was born, siblings if they exist and parents marriage details.

I know this is alot to ask, but I am hoping there is someone out there who is a genius at searching for Irish records as I have failed miserably.

I did apply for a search for his birth certificate at Roscommon in 2008 using the following information:
William Henry Fowler
Born, Queenstown, Co Cork
DOB 1883-1887
and the search came back with nothing found.

Thanks in advance,

Oxfordshire / Re: Tuffrey...Weston on the Green.
« on: Monday 08 August 11 12:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone is connected to a John Tuffrey Approx 1801-1882 who married Lucretia Freeman in 1847. Between the 2 of them there are around 10-12 children (that I know of). It appears to be a bit of a puzzle with the 2 of them...From what I have found so far, there is only 1 child born after they were married - Anne F Tuffrey 1849 and the others were all born prior to the marriage. in the 1841 census I think Lucretia is listed as John's housekeeper, in 1851 she is his wife and the Freeman children were listed as step-children. I can't seem to find any records of the biological father for Lucretia's children and Im not sure if ' Freeman' is her maiden name or if she was married beforehand....as you can see I am more than a little puzzled by this couple and would love it if someone could shed some light on the situation.

Fingers crossed there is someone out there that knows of this family

Thanks for that MERLIN. I did know that Thirza's mother was buried at Cheltenham and memorialised at Albury with her husband Robert. Thanks for that number, I will give them a call and see what they can find out....I have also ordered Thirza's death cert. so hopefully that will have something on it...
