Sussex / Re: Romany links
« on: Wednesday 07 May 14 13:02 BST (UK)  »
I have Penfolds in my line from Sussex .Have sent a PM to Sue & will continue this way if I can help.A few years ago I made contact with an American family who are distant cousins, proven,of myself.Like many who find they have roots in a different country, they had their tree examined by a professional Sussex based researcher &,so generously, sent me a full copy which is concerned with East & West Wittering where our family originated. This even includes Banns,Baptisms,Burials & Weddings going back to the mid 1660`s & a full appraisal of our family from 1705.I must agree that these Sussex Penfolds were not Romany but farmers,Sussex born & bred. Many in the 1800`s relocated due to the upheaval in agriculture at that time.On the other hand,in my maternal line they WERE  Romany, only 3 generations back, again proven by a family contact who still retains the links.Yet,although this line is again from the southern counties of England,I cannot find the surnames mentioned & they did very much intermarry, appearing as Romany families. Each of these sources I think are reliable & by myself could not have gained so much info. unless it came,as it were "straight from the horses mouth."Hope this is helpful.

My family(symonds) were tenant farmers in West Wittering in the 17/1800`s & then relocated to Hampshire where they took up other trades. Some of the family emigrated to north america. It was only recently that I read about the"enclosure laws" that must have been the reason for this.I live abroad so would appreciate any information, also perhaps your past family were involved or maybe you are even from my own family.

Known as Frank Martin, married Emily Dedman in Hants. where they had a Laundry business. Retired to IOW where both died in 1950`s.No children. I have some details of both from their early lives but would like to know if any relatives still reside in Wiltshire. It appears that his grandparents George & Ann(Budd) were Hampshire people, but mother was Catherine Elkins(1860) born in Bishopstone. Cannot verify properly about any of his siblings.Would appreciate any help.

Australia / edward frank symonds sent on ss vedic 1925
« on: Saturday 08 June 13 17:19 BST (UK)  »
Found that my Father went on SS Vedic on 31st.October 1925 as a juvenile migrant under the British Govn. scheme. It was the maiden voyage so well documented by the Melbourne Post at the time giving comments from crew & paying passengers, not good reading. The hapless youngsters were under the supervision of Mr.G.Davies of the Salvation Army. The NAA were so kind to me,sending by post(I am a retired lady living many years in Spain)a full account of that voyage & I was able to make contact with 3 others who shared a parent in that group. However I have not been able to discover where my Father was assigned once he disembarked in Melbourne.I actually insisted on speaking with the chief activist of the Sal.Army in London but was told that all records were lost during the war!My Father died when I was young so I know so little of his life & ,although I can leave behind all the records I have found going back generations for our family ,there is a gaping hole.I know he came back to UK his passage paid by a relative ,then married my mother. The only things he kept from  that time which like others he didn`t talk about, were a certificate from "The Australian Stockman`s Association" signed "Francis Ross" & with a stamp"Department of Home Affairs" stating he is a member,The other is from "The Australian &  Stock Association" to certify he is "A sworn auctioneer & stock valuer",has a Govn. red stamp & ribbon, dated January 24 1927.Francis Ross Co. I know were well known involved in Stockmans society. But is there a record to show where my Dad went & how he was able to get this certificate? On his marriage certificate he noted his occupation as "stockman",a bit odd in a naval city port unless he was the genuine article.I would like to know,Can you help?

Sussex / Re: frank symonds(1855)married Mary Catherine?
« on: Friday 26 August 11 16:07 BST (UK)  »
You have been so informative  Omega but George Deadman  is not my direct family with Mary Dedman. On the 1911 census which shows number of years married it says 36 years. On the same census for the couple I know are my g-grandparents,it states 42 years.Where I got the full name Mary then Catherine I shall have to go back through all I have but I have recently made contact with a relative from the female side & as you know, one thing often leads to another clue.I appreciate all the help given, now I leave you to solve someone else`s query.  kind regards  Cecily3

Sorry that you are confused, there were so many same names & the families so intermarried.Frank Simmonds is NOT the Frank Symonds. Also Mary  nee Trodd married to George Deadman are on the 1891 census,Mary`s pob being Southwick, living at portsdown view cosham. On the 1911 census(that I paid to view) they are both still there, again Mary`s pob being Southwick which is not Havant.Unfortunately I haven`t a copy of my grandfather`s birth cert. but I have his full military record & on enlisting gives his father`s name & address which was Jubilee Road Catherington which isn`t Cosham.Initially I went down the same route thinking that Frank Simmonds was the right man however I would have been surprised since I have never known any member of the family to spell the name that way, also they were for generations farmers as were the Dedmans, not a wood cutter ever appeared as a trade,& in Hampshire were involved in their own Laundry & coal merchants enterprises. You have all been so helpful but I think I shall have to take a trip back to UK to discover more locally.  kind regards Cecily3

I appreciate all the info.you have given me.I shall explain a bit of this family line. Frank Symonds I believe was my g-grandfather."Groom" may well be right about that he & Mary were not married since no record seems to be recorded.I was keen to discover that lost census record because at one point,& I have records which were amassed by a professional researcher going back to the 1600`s & kindly sent to me by an American family who share my line, this group of families,Dedman,Trodd Symonds & Pledge(to a lesser degree) all originated in Sussex,in Agriculture & were involved, then many were found having relocated to Hampshire where I can pick up the census records for 1891,& they then are integrated by marriage & business once again. The 1891 census of 118 London Road,Waterlooville is this Frank & Mary Symonds, their son Frank born 1882 is my grandfather whom I remember well.He enlisted in the military at an early age & I have his whole career known.Walter(my g-uncle was married to Sarah Trodd & they set up another family enterprise as coal merchants in Portsmouth. Her father would be the Henry trodd you mention.I am aware of this history but I would like to discover that elusive census record because one time they were all in Sussex where for generations they had been farmers with good livings, then some went off to other countries,& my direct line gravitated across the sussex/hants border & took up a new self-employed living.Unfortunately the families, perhaps because they were so integrated, used similar names which makes it difficult. In my lifetime I can see the involvement of these families ,but I am hoping I can find who that"Mary" was & how she fits in.
