Travelling People / Re: FISHER & NICHOLS

Hi Wildgoose

My mum's maiden name is Nicholls.  Her grandfather Charlie could speak Romany; he worked at the brickfields near Sittingbourne, they had a site that the gypsies were allowed to use for a couple of weeks, and it was his job to move them on 'cos he could speak the language.  He also had Romany symbols carved into his gateposts.  According to a list on Romany Routes, Nicholls was a gypsy surname ... so the evidence is quite persuasive ...

Travelling People / Nicholls/Kite/Spice family, Kent

Hi all, my mum tells me that her grandfather Charlie Nicholls (born 1878) could speak Romany, and that he had Romany symbols of some kind carved into his gateposts.  When the gypsies were in town, they would go to Charlie if they needed help.  Charlie's father was Abraham Nicholls (born 1835 - he married Mary Spice); Abraham was the son of Richard Nicholls, and Richard's wife Elizabeth was the daughter of Hezekiah Kite (born 1789).  They seem rather setlled to be travelling folk, all based around the Bapchild/Teynham area, near Sittingbourne in Kent, but I'd be very interested if anyone knows whether the family had Romany connections.

Cheers, Liz

Hertfordshire / DORRINGTONS of Sawbridgeworth
« on: Saturday 29 December 07 15:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

I'm new to the site, and was attracted here when I spotted that some members had been discussing my maternal grandmother's family, the Dorringtons.  My mum was only six when her mother died, so we have little knowledge of the family, but it seems that they originated from Sawbridgeworth in Hertfordshire.  The furthest back I have got is Daniel Dorrington, born around 1787, and his wife Ann.  They moved to Brighton; the family line then moves through George Dorrington (b 1821-ish) and Teresa Kelly, to their son Richard Dorrington (1841) who moved to South Shoebury in Essex and married Emily Knott, then to my great-grandfather John Ernest (1868), who ended up in the Milton area of Kent.

Does anyone have any good ideas of how I can find anything more about the Dorringtons?  I'm living quite a long way away now, so it's tricky for me to access parish records etc.

Thanks, L
