Horace T. Aldis (Born Horatio), born February 14, 1796 in Norwich, England.Wife: Susana Peacock Howat. Horace was AWOL from the British Army, changed his name from Horatio to Horace. He is my wife's 2nd great grandfather.

Thanks for the reply.  Horace - Horatio`s father was Horatio Aldis born 1796 in Norfolk.   He was the sister of Eliza Aldis who married my x2 great grandfather (James Askew).

Did you get any further back with James Askew?   His parents were Robert and Mary (nee Jarvis) Askew and it seems Robert`s father was William Askew.   William`s wife was an Ann Phillis (maybe that`s why Robert named his first born Ann Phillis - after his mother).    James`s brother Jonathon ended up in Canada, as did another of his sisters.

I`m up North so have to rely on the web.  My mum`s line is via Charles Aldis Askew (one of James`s sons who ended up in London - Pancras).

Hi, a bit late in replying, but only just found this correspondence on the web.  My gg grandad was James Askew On my mum`s side).    I too found Horatio Aldis fascinating and am in the process of sorting out his son`s life in the States.   Horatio was of course Eliza`s brother (Eliza being the wife of James Askew.)

Hey - thanks to All for replying.  I did find some of the information on Ancestry, but the other bits and pieces you`ve found for me are extremely helpful - thanks so much.  I still need to find out where in England (and possibly Norfolk) my Horace Aldis was from, so will carry on searching over here.

The Footnote.com site that has been mentioned looks really interesting.  I have saved it to My Favourites and will have a good nosey round it this weekend.

Cheers..

United States of America / Horace Aldis in US Army

Hi,

Anyone in the US able to check out an ancestor for me - Horace Aldis?  I don`t know too much about him, but believe he emigrated to the US c. 1845/6.  There is a record of a Horace Aldis in Ancestry`s 'U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914' as enlisting aged 21 at White Hall in 1846 for 5 years (discharged in Texas).  He married c.1853 and ended up living in Texas, joining the Confederate Army there in the Civil War and dying in 1870.  The Army record on line is of poor quality and I cannot see what his occupation might have been.  Also, it doesn`t say where in England he was from or who his parents were.  Is there any other US record I could consult to find all this out?  My Horace Aldis was from Norfolk and his father could possibly have been Horatio Aldis - the records over here in the UK are very woolly in this regard.  I just know that Horatio had a son born about the right time who was probably named Horace.  Many thanks in anticipation.
