Armed Forces / Re: Boer War / WW1 Query

Thanks Jebber - I'm afraid the only details from the Boer War that I have are the three scant references shown on the original pic.
I had no idea he had served prior to WW1 and had presumed he had gone to SA in search of a better life outside of Ireland.
He was a sailor and know that he signed off from a ship in Waterford in March 1902 and was therefore very surprised he served for 12 months in the Anglo Boer War which ended in May 1902.
It is definitely the same guy as his place of birth in a small town land in our town. He was also born into the only Higgins family there too....it would not be a common surname in our part of Ireland.

His name was Edward Higgins.
His service number for the 3rd SAI during WW1 was 13774.
He age on his 1917 Attestation Form was 37....he was actually 39.
Originally born in Ireland, it looks as though he stayed in South Africa as he married there in 1907.

Armed Forces / Boer War / WW1 Query
« on: Tuesday 17 June 25 11:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
See attached a clip from a South African WW1 Attestation form....I have three queries
1. How come this man only served in the Boer War for 12 months
2. I presume the 301 days in the Engineers was separate service??
3. What do the letters 'S W' signify?

Thanks

The Common Room / Query with Naval Prize record
« on: Saturday 19 April 25 11:55 BST (UK)  »
On the attached record there is
an Interim payment of £ 13
A Final Award of £19 / 10s and
A Supplementary payment of £2 / 12s

Does this mean this guy got £13 + £19 / 10s + £2 / 12s ie £35 / 2s

or did he get £13 + £6 / 10 (ie the difference between the Interim and the Final Award) + £2 / 12s = £22 / 2s

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help deciphering WW1 Pension Record

Good evening,
I'm looking for a bit of help deciphering a WW1 pension card. It was for a relative who received a GSW   (gunshot wound) to his left forearm. Family lore has it that Uncle Thomas had a blue left arm (I wonder why????) but we have no idea what the highlighted text means. Any ideas would be welcome.
TIA

The Common Room / Help with crest / logo on Royal Irish Regiment uniform c.1915

This studio photo is that of a private in the Royal Irish Regiment.

1. Would anyone know if there is any significance to the tent-type background?

2. He seems to be carrying a cane  - would this have been normal for a private or would it have had a significance or would it merely have been a prop?

3. I have never seen the logo / crest shown on his left sleeve (is it crossed flags??) Would this have had any significance?
