This may not be helpful if you're wanting to stick close to county Durham, but...

There are Polleys aloft in the distant branches of my tree, from Essex:

Giles POLLEY/POLLY, a yeoman from Great Wigborough*, Essex, England, who raised sheep and had "cornlands." (from will dated 1574. Rootsweb ID: I510083730

[* this is near Colchester]

Daughter Joanna POLLEY/POLLY, born c. 1615 in Great Wigborough, Essex, married in 1634 to JOHN LEMYNG/LEAMING, born c. 1619 in London; son of CHRISTOPHER LEMYNG/LEAMING, born c. 1585 in Bedale, Burneston, NR, Yorks. Christopher married Margaret METCALFE, born c. 1585 in Burneston Yorks.

I've been able to find little else about them other than this group of families (Lemyng/Leamyng/Leeming, Metcalfe, Polley) were Catholic recusants. The grandson of the above-mentioned Christopher Lemyng (also named Christopher), emigrated to Long Island (New York) and Cape May, NJ, where he married Hester Burnet.

Would love to more about these particular Polleys...
