Hi all,
just following this thread of Halliday's and variations of the surname.
Anyone with Halliday's ( or connection to the Halliday's) in the Hutton and Corrie area of Dumfriesshire please make contact.
FARMS mentioned in a large family tree that I am working on include:
Orchard, Woodend, Lochbrow Meikle Whitriggs, Rivox, Penlaw, Griegland.
I have access to significant research that has already been done by others ( over a no' of years and well referenced inmost cases)
I am now looking to fill gaps and obtain further proof of accuracy of this Hutton and Corrie ( area) family tree, by contacting living relatives from this line.
If you have any information ( particularly WILLS, mortcloth info, MI's etc) please make contact.
ALso does anyone have H&C MI's?? prior to 1817??

Other surnames in the tree include - mainly females marrying Halliday men....include:
( but not limited to):
Thorburn, Carruthers, Jardine, Dinwoodie ( or variations of) Laidley or Laidlaw,
,Goodfellow, Roddick, Ruthven, Rogerson, Porteous, Little

Hi again Judy,
catn' believe what I just read.. may really start to get us excited!
We have an Agnes bell who marrid into our halliday family. She was adopted by halliday's then married a William Halliday in 1840.
The only thing is that we have her born or Christened 12/11/1817.
I wonder if there is any chance that she is your Margaret's daughter Agnes Bell?

Do you have other details on Agnes Bell  that can discount this match up with our tree?
We have her death at Upper Mains Brydekirk 6/6/1873 - age 55 years? but anything is possible we know from these times in Scotland.. maybe she was Ch in 1817 but born in 1801?
She was buried in the Kirkconnel Churchyard of Springkell Estate owned by Sir Neil Johnson-Ferguson

Our Agnes Bell and William Halliday had:
James 1851,
Janet 1847
Jane 1848/40
Thomas 1853
I can give you more info if we think there may be more to this.

William above was born in 1804 son of James Halliday born 1766 in Middlebie and Janet Scott 1766/67.
James Halliday born 1766 ws the son of William Halliday born 1731 in Hutton and Corrie and Jean Little.
Again this is all your area and also the area of the trees I have that we can't link into our family.

Once we get into this a bit more I have to send you the trees and info I have but for now ok to keep the contact this way as others may see the messages too.

Me again Judy.. and now you can start to get mildy excited.
I've found what I thought my memory could recall..
We have to find out if your JOhn Halliday was born in 1737 to John Halliday and margaret Dinwoody ( Dinwody or Dinwoodie Ive seen various spellings)
IF this is the case then you have a large well researched tree by at least 3 other Halliday researchers.
I made contact with a lady in Canada last year and was able to put her in contact with 2 others from her tree as well as a fellow who lives in Edinburgh and has written an extensive paper on this family. It was 93 pages of hand written info which I have typed up and hopefully the typed copy was passed onto him in Edinburgh.
On the tree that I have in front of me it has JOhn Halliday born in DFS in 1705. He died July 28th 1786. Married Margaret Dinwoody in ??
John was the son of Matthew Halliday born 1676 and Margaret Thorburn.  All the family where around H&C   so this makes perfect sense with your margaret and John/agnes.
In both the sources of info I have here neither has any further info about John Halliday and Margaret Dinwoody !! so are you the missing link?????

Somehow we have to find out more about your John and whether he was born in 1737.
Please email on (*)
so I can share further info with you and contacts.
In the mean time I'll do some looking for any evidence that may help with your John. Although it sounds like you may have exhausted all sources?
Also need more info, if you have it,  on any other children to your John and Agnes so we can try and look at naming patterns..
JOhn born 1705 had a brother William born 1707 - his side of the family is well documented... just not his brother John's as mentioned before..  hoep that all makes sense
look forward to your further contact.
Anne-Louise Halliday

Hi again Judy,
yes I will get more time in January but a few things.. I have Bell's in DFS and Little's in Cumberland in our tree!
Also if your JOhn Halliday was born in JOhnstone 1737 then John Halliday and Margaret Dinwoody are his parents. have you applied the Scots naming pattern to see if margaret fits for your Margaret 4xg grandmother?
Also if this is the case then I am sure - without pulling out all my files that I have a tree for a halliday marrid to a Dinwoodie or Dinwoody. I know ther are two halliday's married to females with this name.. need to check so don't get too excited!
I see there was a margaret Halilday born to JOhn Halluadh in H&C in both 1766 and 1770 as well as a 2 x Jean Halliday born to a John Halliday in 1764 and 1767 - you probbly already have this and I would make better use of my time by finding hte tree's I have..
will get back to you. regards Anne-Louise Halliday
