Family History Beginners Board / Wills
« on: Monday 01 September 08 20:09 BST (UK)  »
Probably really easy & I'm being daft but how do I order a copy of a will?

I have the death notice thingy in the London Gazette 1894 by the solicitors for the executors, which has the info about where the will was proved etc (Liverpool).

Any pointers gratefully received

Durham Completed Look up Requests / Re: Co Durham Marriages

Hi, I'd be really grateful if you could look at the Barnard Castle records for me.

I have a John Hansell b. c 1811 marrying Mary b. c 1815, their first child was born 1837 so I guess marriage 1830 to 1837. John was from Glaisdale in North Yorkshire but Mary was from Barnard Castle, and they were in Barnard Castle for many years so I think they married there! I'd love to find any information on Mary as I don't know anything else about her.

Many thanks

oops, sorry I didn't see anything about ages.

No idea if they were fibbing, but if a 13 year old is concerned I really really hope they were indeed tailoresses.

The Lighter Side / The greater shame?
« on: Sunday 24 August 08 16:24 BST (UK)  »
I'm wondering how shameful an illegitimate child would be in poor, working class rural societies in the 1860s...

An ancestor Jane SHINGLER was about 17 and unmarried when she had her daughter in 1862, but her daughter was registered at birth as Lizzie Harriman SHINGLER. I'm certain her father was Matthew HARRIMAN - haven't sent off for birth cert but the middle name gives it away a bit!

Jane and Matthew married in 1866. I'm pretty sure Matthew wasn't married to someone else in 1862 as he was unmarried in the 1861 census (as was Jane).

The only reason I can therefore think of for them not marrying before Lizzie was born is that Jane's parents wouldn't give consent, as she was under 21. But it follows that they must've really disapproved for them to prefer to have an illegitimate granddaughter...

Has anyone encountered anything similar, or have other ideas as to why they didn't just lie about their ages? I really wish I could go back in time and ask Jane & Matthew why they didn't marry for four years!

Hi Ben,

I hope you don't mind this interjection... but I wouldn't take it literally that two very poor women were indeed tailoresses as the census says.

Women 'of ill repute' often described themselves as seamstresses or tailoresses. Been a few threads about this previously, click on the links in the reference library:

Probably no way of knowing whether they were telling the truth or not...

Europe / Corsica: Anglo-Corsican Kingdom
« on: Saturday 23 August 08 19:14 BST (UK)  »
Anyone know anything about this?

I have an ancestor who was born in Corsica in about 1797. Evidently of British parentage as she married in Leicestershire in 1816. Maiden name Jane Broughton.

All I know about Corsica is as a result of Googling, so I presume her father (at least) must've been in Corsica because of the Anglo-Corsican Kingdom in 1793-6.

Does anyone have any idea if it's possible to find out more? Anyone more in the know than me confirm if her father was likely to have been military?

Completely baffled by this, the family she married into were bog-standard frame work knitters so she can't have been that posh.

Nick, seems Jacob had a lucky escape as Ellener was still a mariner's wife in 1891.

He possibly snuffed it much later in 1915, but will take a bit more digging.

Thanks again

Wow!

Thank you SO much Nick, your googling fingers are much luckier (and more patient) than mine.

Might also try and chase Jacob's death certificate.

Thanks again
