New information (posting this here in case it helps others).

Mara was adopted at 3 weeks of age by Miss E H Boothroyd, a linguist who was living and working in Siberia.  She escaped with Mara through Scandinavia and eventually sailing from Bergen (presume Germany) to the UK when Mara was 2 years old (so around 1917).  In 1939 she was living at 5 De-Cham Road, St Leonards, East Sussex which can be confirmed by an article in the Hastings and St. Leonards Observer dated Saturday 25th March, 1939.

Miss E H Boothroyd (forenames not discovered yet) had worked as a translator and teacher for a mining company in the Urals.

In the UK she was a member of the Linguist Club in Portsmouth and also involved in setting one up at St. Leonards Parish Room, Marcatoria.  During the Great War (need to confirm which war) she was involved in postal censorship work.

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Re: Sydney A Crawley (b.1921)
« on: Friday 15 August 08 00:49 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for your help - that seems about right (going to order BC to confirm).  Here's another for you :-)

His father Herbert George Crawley was married to Edith Mary Bridger at Chichester in 1913, they had 3 children:

Leonard George Crawley (b.29th Jul 1914) - Chichester
Winifred Eileen Crawley (b. 17th Oct 1918) - Gillingham
Sidney Allen Crawley (b. 1920) - Portsmouth

I can't find any birth, marriage or death info for Winifred, other than what is written in Herbert Georges WWI service record (which also mentions Leonard).  Herbert was demobbed in 1919 (living in Portsmouth) which is where Sidney was born.  I have all of the addresses they lived at in each location but can't find any info on Winifred or Sidney (but i do know they existed).

Anyone have any ideas?

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Sydney A Crawley (b.1921)
« on: Thursday 14 August 08 12:11 BST (UK)  »
My Grandfather had a Brother, Sydney A Crawley who was born in 1921 in portsmouth, i have found his birth entry, mothers name was 'Bridger'.  Other than that i can't find anything else - marriage, death etc.  Does anyone know anything about Sydney or could you point me in the direction of the info i need?  My Aunties knew nothing of their Uncle Sydney so i'm wondering if he died very young.

Any help will be really appreciated.

I've just done that exact search and then looked on the 1891 census for that area.  Not yet found one with a Father by the name of Allen :-(

I am trying to find the birth or any other info for Edith Mary Bridger.   She married Herbert George Crawley on May 10th 1913 at St Peter the Less, Chichester age 23, father stated as 'Allen Bridger' (Deceased).

I can't even find her On the 1901 census so if anyone can shed some light it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks Kerry - much appreciated.

I've only been doing this for about a year, can you tell me is it possible to order copies of parish records just like we do marriage/birth certificates?  If so, how?

Sussex Lookup Requests / Marriage Lookup - John Downer & Mary Pink
« on: Sunday 11 May 08 21:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm trying to find the marriage of John Downer to Mary Pink.  IGI says they married 27 Sep 1827 but i'd prefer to confirm this with another source.

In the 1871 census Mary Pink is listed as being 96 years old, could this be her? (Class: RG10; Piece: 1111; Folio: 37; Page: 10) but the 1841 census (Class: HO107; Piece 1103; Book: 6; Civil Parish: East Wittering; County: Sussex; Enumeration District: 3; Folio: 8; Page: 11; Line: 8) says she was born abt 1811

Any light shed on this would be really appreciated.

Dave
