Re St. Marys Hunslet - SCHOFIELD (1851 Census)

EDWARD SCHOFIELD (6) must have been the son of HENRY SCHOFIELDS 2nd wife (HARRIET EMMOTT).
He married again after his 1st wife died in 1835 (i.e HARRIET BOOTH).
I am also a descendant 4x Grandfather of Henry Schofield.  I hope this answers the original query - some time ago- from Tom Faggus

Hi Tom Here

We are related then but no, Edward was Henry's Grandson. Son of his daughter Sarah Ann.

Somerset / Re: Luxborough

Could a Somerset local Rootschat member please give me an idea of the size of Luxborough. My gt x 3 grandfather came from this village, and I can see him in the 41,51 and 61 censuses with Luxborough clearly entered as his birth place.  He died aged 84 in London and his death cert. makes his birth year 1779. My problem is that a contact on Genes Reunited also has this person in their tree with the birth date I found for my ancestor, but his tree bears no resemblance to mine, as his ancestors all stayed in Somerset for generations, and mine moved to London in the 1800s and stayed there. I can only find one person with that name in the IGI and Luxborough transcripts for that year. Is it feasible that there were 2 men with the same name, born in the same year?  The GR member has implied I must be wrong.
Eileen

I come from the next village.

Luxborough is actually made up of three parts, Churchtown, Pooltown and Kingsbridge.

They are all quite small but add up to what I would say is "normal" Exmoor village size.

Were and still are lots of Webbers around.

I will see if I can make sense of anything.

Somerset / Re: Cutcombe School

Hello
I am researching the Gregory family of Tewkesbury. Emma Gregory born 1838 (Worcester) married Francis Chorley at Worcester Register Office in 1862. Francis is recorded on the census as being resident at Cutcombe School together with his brothers Robert and William in 1851. I believe that Francis was the son of Francis and Eliza Chorley who were farmers.
It has been suggested to me that Francis (born 1844) was the son of wealthy parents, hence his residence in a boarding school. Therefore I would like to find out what I can about the school around this time and possibly about Francis. He ended up as an ironmongers assistant in Tewkesbury.

Hi

Francis senior was relatively well off, a farmer employing agricultural labourers. But very unlikely he owned the farm.

I am not sure why the children were boarding, the farm they lived at was a walk away. It is about a mile from the school.

It was not how we commonly understand a boarding school, it has always just been a little village school.

My two boys go there.

I notice the schoolmaster was called Gregory. Any relation?

I will try and find out why they were boarding.

Tom

Hello,
I am afraid I dont really have anything official on Mellony, I can tell you exactly where she is buried and that she lived at Croydon Farm which is about a mile (1.6km) south of Timberscombe. Edward and Mellony were also very active Bible Christian Methodists and I believe they helped or possibly completely financed the building of the Methodist chapel in Timberscombe. I am not sure of the exact details but it would be fairly easy to find out more given time. There is a magazine concerning the local area (Exmoor), which is generally aimed at tourists but last year there was quite a large article about the methodist chapels scattered aroundthe hills, in it there was a bit about the Cordings with pictures of Edward and Mellony. On the subject of the Townsends, if you look at the 1881 census for  Luccombe, there was a family of Townsends living at East Harwood Farm with William aged 81 having been born in Culmstock.  Always thought there could be a link. East Harwood is about 2 miles west of Croydon and is now in Timberscombe parish. I also think there may have been more Townsends in Timberscombe village at this time. I was born at North Hawkwell, about 1 mile south west of East Harwood, you have quite a lot of distant relations around there.

If I can help more, I will try.

Hello Aussie Possum,

I think Jane Anne Cording was born about 1826 in Huish Champflower in Somerset. Not sure where I have these details from so I cant guarantee the authenticity. She had 3 sisters and six brothers, one of them being Gregory Cording (my G.G.G. Grandfather). I think they probably were in Timberscombe in 1841. Edward, Mellony and Edwards brother James (died 1837) are buried in the churchyard there.

Are you closely related to me?

Cheers
