Christopher, thank you for the lead.  Some of our family have been to Sligo but the school information has only recently come to light.

Ireland / Labour Exchange Records - ROI
« on: Saturday 05 January 08 16:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I am told by my family that emigration to England from the ROI in the 1930's was allowed only if the individual had an offer of work in England.  This was allegedly arranged via the local Labour exchange.  Would these records still exist?  Grandfather left Sligo Town for Coventry prior to WW2.

Sligo / Monastry School in Sligo Town?
« on: Saturday 05 January 08 16:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

As a family, we've been pooling our collective memories of our grandfather.  He said he used to go to a monastic school or possibly one run by the Jesuit order.  Does anyone know of such places in sligo?  Particularly datig from the 1930s?

Thanks in advance.

I agree, he has that WW1 look about him and the lady has an Edwardian look about her too.

There was a HMS Lark in WW1 .  Here's a link and a pic too.

I hope it helps.

Sligo / DOHERTY / O'DOHERTY
« on: Monday 10 December 07 20:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

My paternal g-father was a dodgy character!  He lived in Coventry since the late 30's but (when he actually spoke about the past) claimed to have been born in Sligo or County Sligo.  He said his family were "tinkers" or travelling farm labourers.

He was called Harry James Donal O'Doherty or just plain Doherty.  Whether this is true or not is subject to discussion.  He was chattiest after a few whiskies and then or course his memory affected!   Our family is known as DONAL.  This is allegedly bacause Doherty pronounced with a heavy Sligo accent was inpronouncable to the building site managers he worked for, so he just used DONAL.

So any clues to a travelling DOHERTY or O'DOHERTY family would be greatly appreciated.

Occupation Interests / London Transport bus drivers - records ?
« on: Monday 10 December 07 20:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone knows whether the employment records for London Transport sill exist.  The family story goes that my grandfather was a bus driver in South London after WW2.  I know that London Transport has been broken up these days but I am hoping that the old records survive so I can confirm the family story.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi,

Does anyone know whether the LOndon Fire Brigade records from WW2 (Auxillary Fire Service) survive today?

I am hoping to track my Grandfather's alleged service with them.

As an aside, is it possible to enlarge the detail to the right of the 4th (from the left) gentleman's head.  I am particularly interested in the Signal.  They were unique to each company and might confirm the origin of the photo to the Midland Railway.

Polidor,

Given that you strongly suspect Cricklewood or Brent Yards as the location, and these being ex-Midland Railway (then LMS, then BR premises) you might try to contact the editor of a specialist magazine called the Midland Railway Record, I think it is published by Wild Swan or Ian Allen (I will check when I next see it).  I am not a subscriber myself but here may be a letters page therein.  It's small circulation and specialist editorial team might have more focus than the Railway Magazine which covers all UK Companies.

I go to the Ian Allen Bookshop in Birmingham which stocks the magazine monthly and I will see what it offers and hopefully "browse" the address for you.  The managers don't mind browsers as long as we buy something!

Simon (Kitty's still too embarrased of my anorak).
