Cathleen. I can't help you very much, but a Greg Irvine posted an inquery on Genforum dated 16 Oct 1999 requesting info on a John Irvine born 1817 Edinburgh and marrying a Janet/Jessie Morton in 1852 at Edinburgh. They immigrated to Australia 1852/53. Supposed parents of John Irvine, a John Irvine and his wife a Seedman or Steedman. Unfortunately Greg Irvine didn't leave an email or contact address.

Go to Genforum under surname Irvine and post an inquery. Hope this helps.

Regards Mike

Hi KiwiPringle. Thought I'd drop a note. Around 1977 I had the pleasure of meeting
one Tui Pringle, a very elderly lady. I can't remember if I saw her in Christchurch or
Temuka.

Tui told me she used to visit my Uncle Adam Irvine at Pukerau when she was a little
girl, probably around the 1910, but as the generations passed on, she lost touch with
the Irvine family of Southland.

My Grt Grt Grandfather worked at Mislington farm at Roberton from around 1819
until 1832 when William Scott the leasee died ( His wife Janet Arras ). The Irvine family
then moved to Loch Broom in the highlands then moved to NZ around 1853, he died
in 1865 and is buried at Geraldine Canterbury.

I know the Pringles are related but just not sure how.
Regards Mike Irvine.

Hi again Lindemann. Sorry to put you wrong. Been so long his I did family
history. You're correct with a Rachel Beatty ( Beattie ) listed on the IGI for 1794, my error. None unfortunately for 1801.

Most of the Beatties' came from Dumfries. The descendants of a Rachel Beattie of Hutton and Corrie Dumfries lived 8 miles away from me in New Zealand.

Hi Lindemann.  Thanks for your reply.

I don't now where the writer got the christening date for this Rachel
dated 1794 as no parish records are listed for her. It has always been
presumed that this Rachel is my Grt Grt Grandmother, but my Rachel
died aged 38yrs in 1839 at Contin. So was 1yr younger than her husband
Grt Grt Grd William born 1799/1800.

It is possible that the 1st Rachel died in infancy and a second named
Rachel born 1801.

As I said my Grt Uncle Robert Helome ( Helme ) Irvine has your family name.
I see a Robert and I think, a Janet Helme born to a William Helme of Hobkirk
Roxburghshire. Maybe this is your family.

I'm wondering if Mary Scott ( Mary Helme )was married to my 3x Grt Grndfather as your William Helme had  died, hence Janet visiting in 1841, and the need to mention the Helme name in mine.

However it would have been clearer for the family to give my Grt Aunt Mary the name of Mary Helme Irvine, but this wasn't the case.

It's ok about the 1841 census entry. Someone might list the Irvine family for this census. Yes, the Rachel that died on 17 Dec 1839 is my Grt Grt Grandmother.

My 3x Grt Grdmother was indeed a Mary, but her last name has never been found anywhere. Hope someone can assist us both.

Will say cheers for now.

Dear Lindemann,

I noticed your inquiry regarding the Beattie and Helm family and will provide
the following:

It is very possible that the Janet Irvine in census of 1841 with your family is
my Great Aunt Janet. She was born on the 22 Jan 1825 at Deanburnhaugh
cottage Roberton. To my knowledge there were no other Irvine families
in the area, except my possible Grt Grt Uncle Andrew Irvine and his wife
Elizabeth Beedle, then living at Rosskeen.

I don't have the 1841 census, so can't tell you if my Janet was in her own
home at census time.

I cannot find any Janet Irvine born at Inverness in 1827 as the census
states.

Janet's brother was named Robert Helome Irvine, however many reference documents give his name as Robert Helm Irvine. Robert was the youngest of my great uncle's. He was born on the 5th Aug 1837 at Fannich Contin.

The above's father, William Irvine, worked for the Scott family on the borders and have often wondered if his mother was a Mary Scott.

William's wife was one Rachel Beattie and supposed to be the daughter of Jane Robson, but this I discount strongly. But the connection is very close, as Rachel was of the Hawick Parish, and your connection is also very close as referred to the forementioned Robert Helm as a family christian name.

I hope this info is of interest to you, and we can connect the families together.

Kind regards Mike.

Ps; Note the William Irvine above your entry on heading page for Roxburghshire.

Hi T. Also nice to hear from you.

Thought I'd better correct a couple of errors on this last message
and also on " Royal Household ".

John Scott of Millsington was wrong. His correct name was William Scott
that died on the 3rd April 1829. The new tennant was Charles Scott,
Sir Walter Scott's 1st cousin. In Sir Walter's diary dated 10th April 1829
he gives reference to his cousin approaching him regarding an approach
to the Duke of Burrcleugh on obtaining Milsington.

It was also 1829 that Robert Laidlaw moved to Ontario, and later his
brother David moving to Bovina Delaware USA where many of the Scott
families had moved to, as well as one Janet Scott of the Milsington Family.

Hope these corrections help researchers.

Hi Loobee589

It is good that you have finally dismissed my relations as coming from
one William Irvine and Mary Allen of Newcastle.

My Grt Grt Grt Grandfather did marry a Mary ........? and many people have
assumed that because my Grt Grt Grandfather born 1799/1800 was the
saon of the above. He was indeed born in England, but that's where the
proof stops.

Grt Grt Grandfather died on 7 Dec 1865 at Geraldine in New Zealand aged
65 years. His wife Rachel Beattie died in 1839 aged 38 years, and is buried
at Contin Rossshire.

An earlier entry for my Grt Uncle William Irvine born 18 Nov 1830 is incorrect.
He was born 18 Nov 1830, but at Deanburnhaugh Cottage Roberton Roxburghshire.

Hope this information clears a few points
Regards Mike.

I have direct, from Grt Grandfather's Bible all the family of William Irvine
and Rachel Beattie giving their dates and places of birth.

If I am correct, the IGI only gives the christianings for 2 or 3 of the family
when they lived at Roberton.

Grt Grandfather's brother William was born on the 18 Nov 1830 at
Deanburnhaugh Cottage opposite Milsington Farm. Grt Grt
Grandfather worked for Mr John Scott, until the latter's death in 1829, but
remained there until Mr Charles Scott, ( Sir Walter Scott's nephew ) took
over the lease of Milsington on Whitsunday of 1832.

The family were still at Deanburnhaugh when the next boy, Adam, was born
on the 8 May 1833. The remaining 3 of the family were all born in Rossshire.

Grt Uncle William's tombstone is in bad repair and lies in the Rupanyup cemetery in Victoria Australia

Grt Grt Grandfather William Irvine died on the 7th Dec 1865 and is buried
at Geraldine in New Zealand.

Descendants of another William Irvine that married also at Roberton 2 years earlier in 1817 moved to the USA. I have had communication with this man's Grt Grt Nephew.

Hope this information clears any confusion.

Have a look at my topic Royal Household in Scotland General.

I give reference to an Agnes Kersal 1st wife of a George Hart. The families
of Laidlaw and Irvine come into the families around Roberton Rox.

I haven't checked much, but the Irvine family also married into the Tinline
Family. A branch of the Tinline's also moved up to Rossshire in Scotland.

Regards,

Mike.
