Europe / French ancestry- advice pls?
« on: Saturday 20 December 08 07:47 GMT (UK)  »
The family story is that my maternal gt grandfathers mother was a French Opera singer who came to the UK 'because of the troubles' and 'she was a terrible cook'.

My GGF Frederick Howard Hewson was supposedly born c 1842 Devonport - that is the only clue we have about his him or origins but he ended up in S Wales.

I have found no trace whatsoever of his birth or marriage which would be just too easy!

Apart from ggf apparently having continental business contacts and naming his daur Winifred Emelie (French spelling) Hewson thats all we have to go on.

Any ideas or help welcome please.

Thanks Dick Fowler

Europe / British Army marriage in 1920s Germany.
« on: Saturday 20 December 08 07:34 GMT (UK)  »
According to the family photo album, my dads cousin Ernest COX served in the British Army of Occupation of the Rhineland after WW1 and he married a German girl whose name began with H. If he was in a county regiment it would probably be the Hampshires.
i cannot find the marriage in the usual UK records, Any ideas please?

We always wondered where they were in WW2 ie which side their children would be on!

Thanks Mary. Interesting that Frederick is a recurrent first name in this family, otherwise no clues in naming patterns. Will investigate.

Devon Completed Lookup Requests / Devonport 1841 census lookup
« on: Sunday 02 October 05 00:56 BST (UK)  »
I am stuck for the birth and parents of my gt Grandfather Frederick Howard Hewson (grandfather and uncle named the same.) The only reference we have is from the 1891 census for Newport Mon giving his details as b 1843 Devonport. Nothing on GRO, IGI etc.

Could SKS with access to the 1841 Devonport census please see if there are any HEWSONs , possibly misspelt eg Hooson, Hussen.

Hewson is a rare name in Devon.

Many thanks. DF

Hi, my gt gt grandmother b Bridford bacame the third (and last!) wife of Richard Caseley in 1819. His daur from his first marriage married a Lamacraft and is mentioned in his will.

If they are on your tree i can look for the will etc if you have not got it.

Me again Brisgirl.
I read the Tolson MM links you gave. A short tale which might interest you. Back in the early 1960s there was a mysterious green wooden hut next to the immaculate top bowling green in Ravensknowle Park. To us small boys, the little old men, many with eyes or limbs missing, who seemed to be in 'residence' were terrifying.
They were WW1 veterans, which is fitting.
Eventually, they let us use THEIR bowling green instead of the public one. It was like being given a medal.
The green hut is still there with another generation of little old men using it. DF

Hi Brisgirl,
very many thanks for the prompt and detailed reply. No obvious connections to my lot but i shall investigate.
Would John and Margarets Aussie marriage cert state parents, as UK ones would/should?

Tentatively, my Hewsons were linked to a prolific Hewson dynasty from Kerry, but they had connections all over the place including Dublin. My ggf (Frederick Howard Hewson, b 1843 reportedly in Devonport/Plymouth) is being difficult- cannot find his birth or parents. Rumours of his mother being French -and an awful cook!

I may be in Huddersfield around Xmas. Let me know if you want info or pics re Tolson MM.
