Armed Forces / Re: can anyone tell me what this badge is ?

I wonder if it could be one of the On War Service (OWS) Women's badges issued in that year. One of the badges, or rather brooches because of the absence of buttonholes for females, was triangular in design and issued in 1916.    They were issued to females and others in occupations at Munition Factories etc in an effort to show they were doing their bit for the war effort.  I wonder if the separate bit at the bottom you refer to was for the pin catch attachment for the female wearer?

This is the CCG insignia and a picture of a uniform button also.

I suppose that it is possible the insignia on the arm of the uniform could be that of the CCG (British Occupation Zone) Germany:

A blue flag, on the canton a shield, a light blue cross on red with the golden, interlaced letters "CCG

I believe they had their own cap badge and lapel badges for officers, the uniform is believed to have been a mixture of khaki and blue - a bit of a ragbag assortment from all accounts.  I suppose some of the ranks could have been honorary, along with the civil servants etc etc.  That would probably account for him not being traceable through the LG ?

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 census lookup please - Whittaker in Cockerham
« on: Sunday 30 December 07 01:12 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks Carole,

Yes they had 8 sons and I have details of them.  She was Betty Threlfall married to Robert Whittaker. She was christened in 1776 October.

He died in 1836 and from the Records she died in May1842 and I think she was living with the Whittaker's in Dolphinholme then - "died at Dolphinsholme, place of abode" is in the records at Lancashire RO. She is not on the census in Dolphinsholme though in 1841 - it has been checked.

I would have thought that she would have been with one of the children - probably forgot to mention her !

Thanks a lot anyway

Neil

Should be in her 60's, married to Robert Whittaker in 1797 in Cockerham.

Many thanks.

Hello Wyndham,

Sorry for not replying earlier to your post about Chillianwallah and your query, but I  see that you are getting responses from more qualified people than me.  I was just looking for a relative of a friend initially and then became interested in the Chillianwallah affair.

I would think that it is definitely Scinde as suggested by themonsstar. There are other regiments that are allied to regiments of this name in the British Army. It is a former region of Pakistan.  I do know that there are other references to the way that you spell it also - seems to be a choice of spelling at the moment.

This is a quick reference to where the 1st Bn were located, from their website.  I think that it is quite possible from an earlier suggestion that this was a "local attachment" for training/supervision etc.

1877 England: Aldershot (1877 and 1878)
1879 India: Mhow (1879 and 1880)
1881 India: Mhow - (July) 1st Battalion, The Worcestershire Regiment established
1881 India: Bombay
1882 India: Nasirabad (1882 and 1883)
1884 India: Karachi (1884 to 1886)
1887 India: Quetta (1887 to 1889)
1890 India: Poona (1890 to 1892)
1893 India: Poona - Kemptee
1894 India: Kemptee
1895 Burma and Aden: Rangoon

Thanks Annie and Ken for your posts.  I will have a look at the links that you have kindly listed.

Annie - he was not married until later, 1858- some 7 years later and then went on to father 7 children.  He died in 1875 and there was an inquest in Middleton (held at the Mason's Arms!) that declared him "a local character that could consume copious amounts of alcohol".  Quite active for someone without arms in those days !

Ken - thanks for the info.  I will pass on to my friend - she is housebound now but I suppose I could arrange something for her.

I will try the medal search too.  Thanks again to both of you.

Neil
