Hello Sheila
Have just been reading your posts about Bilston families.  I've been busy working on other bit of my tree, so have only just caught up with your thread.
Have you come across anyoe from the Banks family?  My Gt Gt Grandfather William Banks was born in Bilston in 1834, he was a shoemaker.  His father, William, was a coal miner born in Madely in 1805.  There were four other children, Joseph born in West Brom 1839,Richard born in Bilston       1836. Sarah born in Bilston 1847 and Samuel
William Jnr married Sarah Ann Stokes (?) and they had a daughter Sarah Ann, my Gt Grandmother.  She married Edward Davis and they lived in Oldbury where my Grandmother Miriam was born.
Would be very interested if you come across any of these.  Another name i would also be interested in is Jarvis - Thomas Jarvis married Sarah Davis, they had a son Thomas, a daughter Grace and another son

regards
Mary

Hello Ian
Thank you for the information.  I have puzzled over this family for the last few weeks.  I'm more than happy to share my tree, just let me know how we can do this.
I used to stay in Enstone during summer holidays, I stayed with my Gt Aunt, Gertrude Hawtin, she lived in Cleveley Road I think.  As you will probably know, the Huckin and Hawtin families are linked in a number of generations.

Thank you also to Pennie - I haven't had a chance to look at other records, I had wondered if Hester moved to Banbury and remarried, but Northants is just as likely.

All this info is really helpful, many thanks.  Thomas was only a few months old when his father died if this information is correct and that could explain why he is living with his maternal grandparents in 1841, by 1851 he is married with his own family.  Perhaps Hester moved away and married someone from another parish.  I'll keep looking.

What a fantastic service from Rootschat people and early in the morning as well - glad to know that  I'm not the only one accessing the site at these early times.

Masha

Many thanks for this information.  I know that the Huckin family is inter-related across various parishes in Oxfordshire, so I definitely  need to check Chadlington.  Perhaps the family did die before the 1851 census, but then the death of an Edward in 1871 would suggest that he at least was alive, but where?  The mystery deepens.

Your help is much appreciated and will give me more leads for my next trip to the local libraary.

Oxfordshire / Huckin family missing from every census!
« on: Sunday 17 February 08 16:54 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone suggest where I look for my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather and his family?
I can find him, Edward and his wife Ester, listed as the parents of my Gt Gt Grandfather, Thomas, at his baptism in Enstone, 15th May 1831 (parish record)

There is no record of the family on any of the census returns.  I know that Thomas married Rebecca, they were both 18, and I can find them on the census returns.  Thomas died in Enstone in 1898 and  Rebecca is listed on the 1901 census living with her son and family.

I would love to know where Edward and Ester(possibly Hester) came from and where they lived.

Any suggestions as to where I can look, or as to why I can't find the family on 1841 etc census?

Many thanks
Masha

Gloucestershire / Caroline Amy Needs/Pegler/? Bristol
« on: Saturday 26 January 08 19:30 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information regarding the first wife, Caroline Amy needs,  of my Grandfather, Edward Gerald Pegler, known as Jack or John.

The couple married in Bristol in 1908, just before the birth of their first son, when Caroline was 16 and my Grandfather was 25

They had a second son some two years later.

After WW1 I believe they were no longer togethe.r  My Grandfather left the Marines, not sure when and eventually arrived in Oxford, by which time he had met my Grandmother, who came from Oldbury, near Birmingham. She lived in London for a time and had my mother there before joining my Grandfather in Oxford in 1923.

They had another daughter in 1925 and didn't marry until 1940.

He takes years off his age on the marriage certificate and she adds them.  There was a 17 year difference and they reduced it to 12.  He was born in 1883 in Warminster, she was born in 1900.

He describes himself as a widower, but I can't find a death registration for Caroline Amy.  I know that she had a second partner, but don't know if they married, don't know his name.

Are there divorce records anywhere that might give a clue, although as he describes himself as a widower did he wait until she died before he married my Grandmother?

Many thanks Carol for taking the time to find this info.  This will set me off in yet another direction.  I am very new to Roots, but already the 'community' has made me feel welcome.

Hi

I notice Mary James was also working for Obadiah in 1841

Ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years on the 1841 census so George could have been between 30-34 so his birthyear could be between 1807-1811

Thanks for reminding me about the rounding up and down of ages, I'd forgotten about this practice.  Yes,  Mary James was also in the household.  Her family lived in a village some 6/8 miles from Bicester, which is why she ended up in the Workhouse there.  She went on to marry a widower with two daughters and they had four more children together.  Three of these children died as children/teenagers and Mary herself died at the age of 38.  Quite a sad life.  Her husband married for a third time, but had no more children.  I don't know what happened to my Gt Gt Grandmother until she married a James Washbrook at Kidlington parish church.
Masha :)
