Somerset / Re: Lock/e family Bishops Hull Somerset
« on: Wednesday 22 November 23 16:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hello - somewhat late to this discussion, but I am descended from Charles Lock who married Matilda Sutton. Ancestry DNA implies that at least Charles and Francis were brothers as I share links to descendants of Francis.  Philip was pardoned after serving seven years in a prison hulk (the Stirling Castle) in Portsmouth Harbour.  He moved to London where he married a widow, they had six children, and he ended up in Leavesden Asylum where he died in 1890.   Cheers,   Andy

Many thanks Kris and Wozzle,
I notice several siblings of William snr and Mary too - but none of William Jnr, and no burials - so looks like the family moved in and out of the parish within 2 generations.
Onward with my search!
Thanks again,
Cheers,
Andy

Hi Les,
Many thanks for looking.
I thought that STUCKEY was an unusual name - that is until I looked in Somerset, where there seems to be rather a lot of them.
Best regards,
Andy

Hi all,
I'm relatively new to this board.  I have several links to Somerset - but am particularly interested in tracing my SUTTON family.

William SUTTON was born in Taunton St James or Kingston St. Mary (from army and census records) about 1782.

William joined the army (40th Regiment of foot) in 1796.  He married Mary CHAPMAN in Kill St. Nicholas, Ireland and had two known daughters.  Eliza, born Lesacca, Spain 1813 and Matilda, born Graincourt, France in 1816.

William retired from the army in 1819 and returned to Taunton.  He was living in Bishops Hull in 1841.  His wife Mary died in 1838 at the Sugarloaf Inn, Bishops Hull.
William remarried Jane WARR(E), and died in 1863 in Bishops Hull .

Matilda married Charles LOCK in 1841.  But I have no idea what happened to the eldest daughter Eliza.  Did she survive and return to Taunton too?  If anyone has any information on here I'd be very grateful.

Likewise, I'd love to find out more about William's birth and parents.  His marriage certificates give his father's name as William, a carpenter, but I know little more.

Many thanks,
Andy

Hi Les,
Happy New Year!

Just came across your posting.  Sounds like a fascinating book.

Several of my ancestors came from the Taunton area - surnames LOCK(E), STUCKEY, SUTTON and MILLARD.

I've seen your posting on LOCKs (but unfortunately don't recognise any of them  :( )

Does your book cover Bishops Hull as well as Taunton?

My STUCKEY (Samuel) was a bootmaker in Castle Street, Bishops Hull in 1851 having moved up from Topsham, Devon some time before 1837 (he married Elizabeth MILLARD at St. Mary Magd in 1837).

I'd really like to find my William SUTTON who was a retired soldier (left the army in 1819) originally from Kingston St. Mary, but returned to Taunton.  He was living in Bishops Hull in 1841.  His wife Mary died in 1838 at the Sugarloaf Inn, Bishops Hull.

Many thanks,
Andy

Hi Sue,
Edith Emily TIPLADY is in my tree too - she was my Gt Grandmother's sister, so would love to link up.

I don't have any details about Ernest Joseph SULLIVAN's parents and, like you hadn't found his birth details - however your posting got me thinking...

I wondered whether his entry had been mistranscribed, or if his mother had (re)married and he took his stepfather's surname - so thought I'd search for him with a different surname.

Brockford is near Wetheringsett - which is in Hartismere district.  I did a search on Freebmd (http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/) for 1870's births for Josephs and Ernests registered in Hartismere and noticed that there's an entry for Q3 1872 for a Joseph Ernest SALNAVE - which has a ring of potential similarity.  Might be worth following up - especially as the surname SALNAVE has only two entries in Freebmd - this one and another in 1920, so I suspect it is a mistranscription.

Cheers,
Andy
