A philosophical instrument maker was actually a maker of scientific, mathematical and astronomical instruments

It's philosophy as in natural philosphy (physics) rather than thinking  ;)

For emigrants from Scotland to North America, Australia, etc there is a  year-on-year compilation of ships known to have left a Scottish port, or holding Scottish passengers, from 1680 to 1910 . Most of them with links to online passenger lists , at:
