John Powell mentioned in the 1901 of this link was known as John Penn son of George and Jane Penn in 1881 and 1891 census in the Forest of Dean.
He used the name John Powell when he married Sarah Preest in 1892.
I cannot locate a birth record for him, but he was baptised in 1879 as Thomas John Powell Penn, parents George and Jane Penn. He was baptised at the same time as his brother William Penn.
From the census details I guess John was born c1875 as his age was given as 6yrs in 1881.
John and Sarah Powell are my Great Grandparents.

Thanks Julie for the reply to my query of Swan Square.

I have discovered that Nightingale Village was situated by the Forge Hammer Pub in Pontnewynydd Pontypool but came under the Trevethin Parish. My Ancestors lived in Llanover Row for the later part of 19c and early part of 20c.

Hello Heather
I will be visiting the Gwent Records Office in Cwmbran next week so I will take a look at the 1861 census for William Harris and his Wife Gwenllian.
I have only just read your query and can see you posted some weeks ago. I hope I will be lucky for you.

Hi Kated

The only details I have on Patrick Murphy being a Soldier is from his daughter's second marriage certificate in 1869. The daughter Johanna was born in Cork approx 1830. I have her first marriage certificate from 1855 which took place in Pontypool, her Father then was listed as deceased in the occupation column and no other ref. to his trade.
In the Canongate census for 1841 which was taken at Edinburgh Castle a Patrick Murphy 35 years old is listed as being married and a Soldier.
I believe records are kept of Soldiers at Kew but I think you need to know their Regiment.
I know I don't have alot of information to go on.

Hi
I read with interest the topic of catholic records as part of my family history research is linked to St. Albans RC Church in PONTYPOOL.
Are all the Churches parish records now with the Gwent Record Office Ladkyris?
