Thanks Shaunj  :)
I had wondered if her surname would be Walrond until I saw the fds entry.  I think I may have to pay for a researcher in Barbados... I cant afford to go there myself unfortunately lol
I guess I will have to start saving up the pennies!

Other Countries / Barbados: Graydon help please!
« on: Monday 05 July 10 23:38 BST (UK)  »
Im looking for information on my ggggrandfather William Graydon.  According to his Chelsea Pension records he was born in 1827/9 in St Munchins Limerick Ireland.  In 1847 he joined the army in Barbados and served in the Quartermaster Generals office for the next 26 years!  He retired in 1874 and it states that he intended to continue living in Barbados.
His son, my gggrandfather, William Walrond Graydon, was born in 1850 in Barbados according to the army indices.  His mothers name is recorded just as Isabella on the birth certificate which is registered at St Mathias.  On FDS is a record of their five other children's Christenings which states Isabellas name is Anna Isabella Campbell.
I can find no record of the marriage of William and Isabella in the army records and have no idea if they were married before the journey to Barbados.
Im at a loss as to where to go now.  I know Campbell is quite a common name in Barbados but as to whether that is relevant I dont know.  Id also love to know if the middle name given to gggrandfather of Walrond is an indication of some ancestry or just an attempt to try and gain some kind of pretended kinship with Humphrey Walrond, the Governor of Barbados.  My mother was told by her grandmother that her family was descended from him and we would of course love to know if this family story is true or not!
Thanks for any help or advise

The Lighter Side / Just had to tell someone
« on: Sunday 23 March 08 19:30 GMT (UK)  »
After months of fighting my way through I have finally found g grandmas name  ;D She is recorded in 1901 as Kate E Martin, in 1891 as Jane E Martin, had my grandad in 1902....maiden name Elizabeth Jane Stebbins.  Married to g grandad....name Elizabeth Jane Stibbens.  Finally found an Elizabeth Jane Stebbins and stuck with that, but no census records for her  ??? Today I broke through that brick wall, her dads surname is Stebbing  ::)
I no longer care if her name is Elizabeth, Jane or Kate, Stibbens, Stebbins or Stebbing.  From now on I will just refer to her as g grandma and woe betide anyone that tries to stop me  ;D

She stated her age as 19 when she was married in 1877, which is consistant with later dates on census etc so 1858 ish.

Antrim / McLaria Anyone?
« on: Saturday 16 February 08 15:10 GMT (UK)  »
Sorry I put this post in the wrong place first time round   :-[
Is there such a surname as McLaria other than belonging to my ggggrandmother before she married and her parents (apparently).  On her wedding details that is definately the name listed, the same on the birth of her two children (thanks for the help with that a few months ago).  She was born in Antrim though I dont know where but having searched through every site I can find I can find no other reference to it.  She was married, and the children were born in Scotland so is there a possibility of a spelling error?  I did wonder if it was McCleary (possibly, maybe)
Her name was Eliza, her father Francis and mother Elizabeth (although the marriage records dont even seem to know if her mothers maiden name was McLaria or Kennedy   )
All I can say is thank goodness its good ol' Kennedy on the other side!
Thanks for your help

The Common Room / Re: How do you choose?

Im glad to see Im not the only one flitting around  ;D  Im looking forward to going to Norwich and seeing if I can find some old records there, but every now and thne I find myself drawn to someone.  The last one I went on a tangent with I couldnt find a birth of, then when I looked properly at the census realised there was a previous marriage for her mother which I had totally overlooked  ::)
I have all records kept on a laptop and want to give my mother a christmas present of all the things I have found about her family on a cd  :)  It could become a regular thing every year!
I have posted on roots about one brick wall and have a way through it and Im really excited now.  I didnt realise when my dad was researching his line quite how addictive this stuff is  ;D
My kids have a vision of (if anyone has seen it) the Black family tree in Harry Potter painted on a wall but I dont think I will go that far!

I havent a marriage certificate, just the date in 1904 to Charlotte May Goodfellow.  Trying to keep my costs down until after xmas so putting off anything that isnt extra important for the moment.  But Im now realising that my impatience wont hold off that long  ???  Wonder if the kids will accept that Father Christmas has brought them a family tree  ;D
