Hello!

I think I am the chap you were refering to investigating the Griggs family in Kent. William and Mary do appear to have had a daughter called Sarah. There is a baptism at Stodmarsh Kent on 10th November 1816 of a Sarah Griggs to a William and Mary. This fits in well between baptisms of Thomas in 1815 at Littleborne at Emma 1819 at Wickhambreuax.

Because Sarah married in 1838 (before the first census of 1841) she would not have appeared in any censuses with her family. If you would like any more information please contact me or take a look on my (incomplete) website www.tonygriggs.btinternet.co.uk

Yes I have already checked the PR index for Northbourne. No sign of a death for a Mr read or a marriage of Sophia Fagg to Mr Read.

Just taken another look at the marriage entry at Northbourne.

The marriage that occurred on 9 April 1825 at Northbourne between William Griggs (bachelor) and Sophia Read (widow) was witnessed by a Matthew Fagg and a Mary Fagg. I think that it is a safe assumption that this is the correct marriage given the surnames of the witnesses!

I have amongst my records all occurrences of the Surname Grigg, Griggs and variants for the 1841 and 1851 census found in Kent. The only Sophia to appear on the 1841 is the Sophia mentioned above. The 1851 census has 3 Sophias, the Sophia mentioned above and her daugter born 1843. The third Sophia is also only a child (born 1845) and not related to this family at all.

There is a marriage at Northbourne, Kent on 9th April 1825 for a William Griggs and a Sophia Read. It is noted in the entry that Sophia is a widow whilst William is a bachelor. This is right before the family start having children at Woodnesborough. Maybe it should be a marriage of a Sophia Fagg and a Mr Read that should be searched for (i.e. Sophia was married before).

Kind Regards

Hello All

The well known Kent fisherman/lifeboat famiy from the Hythe, Folkestone area are not (at least within the timescales of the parish register entries below) related to the famly in Thanet. The Hythe family has its roots in Monks Horton, Kent and began as a seperate branch with Margaret Griggs who was born in 1784 she had a son called Wright Griggs baptised at 1813 in Sellindge as an unmarried mother. Margarets ancestry dates back to a line I can trace to John Griggs who was the curate at Burmarsh Kent in 1563. I have reasearched this line extensively.

I have an electronic copy of the Griggs book mentioned below. The members of this line form a seperate branch to the Hythe Griggs. A chap called Fred Griggs researched and published the book in 1986. The George Griggs and Elizabeth Bartlett mentioned below are most likely to fall into this group somewhere. Fred focused his research on Families he found in the Faversham/Thanet areas. The book does have on the charts within it both of the George Griggs's (1735 and 1744) and both are very likely to link back to this lineage. Unfortunately Fred did not include the raw data in his book and he has not tracked the descendants of either of the George's mentioned above.

Please find attached an image of the chart of the Birchington line Fred produced.

I have collected over 1100 baptisms, 500 marriages, 500 burials and other sources of the various Griggs families in Kent and am pleased to try and help anyone where I can.

Kind regards

Tony Griggs
