Australia Lookups completed / Re: Look up please - HELM Eliza SA COMPLETED

Interesting, another potential path. "SUSPECTED LUNACY
Eliza Owens was charged on suspicion of lunacy. The patient is in the hospital,
and was there visited by the Police Magistrate. Drs. Cook and Smith certify that
she is an imbecile. It is ordered that she be sent to the asylum for the insane at
Goodna, the order to be suspended for 80 days".

1900 'Barcaldine Police Court.', The Western Champion and General Advertiser for the Central-Western Districts (Barcaldine, Qld. : 1892 - 1922), 22 December, p. 11.

Daughter Violet was born in Barcaldine.

That's a  bugger then.  Who  did  Violet marry and where  please?
regards Jenn

She married Bertrind Charles White in Qld, who had a previous NSW marriage to Caroline Brown (issue Beatrice).

Update. I think the 1901 death for Eliza is definitely wrong. I bought the certificate.

Why I think it's wrong:
(1) It's in Rockhampton. Wrong for this family.
(2) The 'issue' is wrong. John Henry (23) Bourne (?) (19), William (16), Narty (?) (15), Augustus (6), Beatrice (5), Barty (?) (2)
(3) Although they entered through SA (we believe), the family even now remembers this ancestor is supposed to be Scottish. This Eliza's birth given as SA.
(4) No maiden given. On every other record, Eliza is Helm.

A clue for anyone that actually belongs to this Eliza. There is a cross next to Where and Age in the marriage box, although spouse is listed as John Owens. There's also one under Where Born, listed as Adelaide, South Australia, and one in the blank Parents field.

'Our' Eliza and John had Henry (VIC), Luke (VIC), Rosianna (VIC), Violet (Qld), James John (Qld), Augustus (Qld) and Eliza Rebecca (Qld). My interests lies in Violet, and I am certain of her parentage. Her birth record in Qld confirms the other children - Henry -9 , 'Rose Annie' - 4, William -2 (I didn't have William so must look) and One Male Dead (must be Luke) are the issue proceeding her. Mother 26 years. Eliza, formerly Helm. Born Edinburgh. father 31 years. John Owens. Born Hampshire, England.

That Augustus has me concerned though - although it is 2 years off the birth of the other one. I may need to revise him or get the certificate.

Any tips from here?

Interesting though to see that the number of comments has significantly reduced since week one. I wonder if that means people have stopped commenting or if they have dropped out of the course?

How many times can they keep repeating ' I've been researching for 20 years but I've learned so much new information this week' ?

  ;) ;) ;)

Maybe they meant to say late 18th century?

I decided to do it on a whim. Basically - what have I got to lose?

I'm a little disappointed that it's week 3 and we haven't really hit any major 'meatiness' as previously mentioned. Maybe because I've been researching for awhile...but so far it's really the basics as I see it, most researchers will already be aware of most things mentioned.

Having said that, I have enjoyed progressing through the course. It's free! And has been a good reminder regarding organisation...argh!

Australia / Re: Edward Wotton

I certainly wouldn't disregard that at all Neil - could be quite possible that Wooton/Wotton are the same!

I've researched quite a few Wottons who entered Australia via SA. A large family. Some of them moved through VIC, NSW and QLD, also WA.

I wonder if they are related. Maybe his obituary would be a good start on Trove (if it's there?).

And regarding the spelling, the ones I chased were alternatively Watton, Wotton, Wootton etc   :-\

EDIT: I called them, the information is too old to access using the tribute search unfortunately.

Did they say how far back they go back now ??? With all the cutbacks it's a wonder they have anybody doing it anymore. ::)

When I worked for them, we had access to all their online records, which went right back to the early 1990's. :D

Neil

Hi Neil, something to do with a systems change/upgrade, I was put through to a call centre for Classies who could not view it, called the office and was told they can no longer view either. Only certain people can view the old system, I think he said subscriptions can (????).

Long story short no can do - I believe he said they can only see a few years worth but as I was only concentrating on "you can't help me" I don't remember the exact range (sorry) :)

Both NSW library card and national library card give access to SMH 2006-current.   In the long term it is worth getting one or both cards - free and available online.

In the short term if you tell me the name and date I will post it for you.

Thanks so much, have sent you a PM :)
