Sussex / Re: Chatfield - Brighton
« on: Monday 29 August 11 07:16 BST (UK)  »
I have just looked at an inscription on a book of English poetry that belonged to my great-gradnmother, Mercy Dumbrell, nee Chatfield (also previously Ransley). Her 'affectionate brother', C.E.Chatfield, inscribed the book on his departure from Australia to England, in 1910.
Mercy's family were the Chatfield confectionary firm in Brighton, so it may interest anyone looking at the Brighton Chatfields to know that C.E. Chatfield visited his sister all the way in Oz at that time! When exactly he made the trip over to Australia I don't know, but I would imagine that he stayed for a considerable length of time, given the length of the sea journey.

Many thanks. It looks as if James passed away at some time, and Jane remarried John Mabbett. Thanks for the lead about origins.plus - am also tracing the Strodes of Glastonbury.
Dianne.

Somerset / Sarah Ann CAPLE
« on: Saturday 27 August 11 11:11 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information on Sarah Ann Caple, born abt 1837 in Winscombe, Somerset. I know there was a Sarah Caple who was born around 1813, so perhaps she was her aunt. Sarah Ann Caple was my great-great grandmother - married to Philip Dumbrell of Brighton. Sarah's mother seems to have remarried, as in the 1851 census Sarah is the stepdaughter (and daughter) of John and Jane Mabbett in Winscombe.
I would really appreciate anymore information on the Caple family.
Many thanks,
Dianne.

A bit late for this chat, but I have some information the Chatfields from Brighton. Ebenezer had a sister, Mercy, born around 1843. She married Thomas Ransley, also a confectioner. They emigrated to Australia in 1882, where he died two years later. She then married my great-grandfather, James Dumbrell, also from Brighton, and also a confectioner. She was 42, and he was 22!!!!! He was born in Brighton in 1863. The family 'legend' is that he followed the family to Adelaide to marry one of the daughters, and upon finding the daughter married to someone else, he then (perhaps saw a window of opportunity?) married the widow. They had two daughters, Jessie (who died aged 1 year), and Louisa Matilda, my nana. Jessie, Louisa, Matilda, were names of James's brother and two sisters whom he had left behind in England - never to see again.

Thanks for your reply.
I had seen this site and the Millbank family in 1841 are from whom I am descended.

 ;D
I am also descended from the Milbank family in Henham who are in the 1841 census. I now have quite a bit of information on where they went to. Please get in touch.
Dianne.

Dumbull and Dumbret are mistranscriptions for Dumbrell/Dumbrill. Try these.
Dianne.
Many thanks. I cannot believe how many ways people decide to spell Dumbrell!!!

I have only just started researching, but I have found a link with you. My great-great-grandfather was Thomas Dumbrell, born in Horsted Keynes abt 1813. (Dembvell is the mistranscribed census name used, although I have posted a correction to Dumbrell) In 1841 and 51 he is living in Scaynes Hill near Lindfield. He was a blacksmith.
His son. Philip, became a carpenter and moved to Brighton where his son, James, my great-grandfather was born in 1863. James emigrated to Australia in the early 1880s, and married widow Mercy Ransley (previously from Brighton, nee Chatfield). She was 20 years older than he, and they had two daughters, Jessie Rose (died aged 1), and my grandmother, Louisa Matilda.
I am looking for relatives of the Dumbrell family of Lindfield.
Best wishes,
Dianne.
