Hi Yes it is like looking for a needle in a hay stack! Like you say, it is a common name. I have looked at the private grave site online at the old Kerribree Station thinking he may be buried there, but NO! Also asked Library at Bourke and could not find him buried around that area. Being a lone man working there, and getting on in age, he may not have been living with anyone after he left Kerribree Stn. He may have well been just camping with his swag and met with fate and died. He was obviously still voting there though in Fords Bridge. It's only a small village and he would have been known to someone, but they (like James) are all long gone too! Oh well, I think it will just remain a mystery! I have looked on TROVE over and over and all I could find was the mention of him living in Kerribree when his son died regards the Will.
Thanks!

Thank You! I am not sure if I actually saw the 1916 electoral roll either? I am going on what the Librarian sent me via email. I did access the rolls at one point when ancestry.com had free  records (I am not a paying member) and saw him listed up to 1913. Yes, as it only listed him as Fords Bridge, but I would be pretty certain it is him. As it is only a very small place, but he may have left the Kerribree Station at some point and just wandered off, but as he was getting on in years - where did he go? He may have just dropped dead on the way and had no ID on him. I have been told that the cons had to carry their documents on them at all times, such as Ticket of Leave and Cert of Freedom, but if he fell into a river or creek and drowned, these may have gone with him!? He may not have had other form of ID on him if he did drop dead somewhere. He was a lone man working outback and did not marry again. The son who left him the Will, was the only family member he reunited with. He had another son and 2 daughters, but we know that no contact was made. He just drifted away and lost contact.  Thanks for your help. I am very doubtful if I will find anything more. I was visiting a Library yesterday and a lady made the suggestion regards him being put into care in a hosp or benevolent society. I just want to complete my notes on him - which has turned into 70 pages! It makes sense to
me he died in Fords Bridge if that was where he was listed when voting.  A little Irish wanderer!

Hi Maddy,
James is a hard man to track. He was married and widowed in 1865. He fostered his children out in the area of Violet Town Vic 1865. He roamed off to seek work. Some point in time he meets up with his eldest son also named James. The son owned a team of horses and water tank. He was working around Narrabri  NSW with his team of horses. At some point in time the son heads to Sydney and he dies aged 27 leaving his estate to his father. Sadly noone could track James down for a few years to inform him of his sons death and wishes. The horses and cart were all sold and James came in a bit of money. At the time of his son's death, James is listed as working at Fords Bridge NSW on a Kerribree Station during 1880's  and beyond. A new search last year he was located living at Kerribree Station 1903/04 and also living in Fords Bridge as late as 1916. Cannot be found in that area in 1917. He would be an old man by then. He was 18 yrs of age when he came to VDL/Tasmania as a convict in 1843 from Dublin. I cannot find his death or burial anywhere. This is just another long shot that
someone suggested to me yesterday. A very hard man to find!
Cheers!

Australia / NSW Hospital records look up please

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has access to NSW hospital records? I am mainly looking for Bourke NSW.
Searching for James Egan.Living in Fords Bridge NSW 1916 on the Electoral Rolls. Librarian cannot locate James from 1917 in Fords Bridge. As he would be an old man, I am guessing he was taken into care? I cannot find any death records for him in that area.  Or he wandered off alone and met with fate? I have looked just about everywhere for many years. Almost completed history I am writing and someone suggested looking at hospital or benovolent society records.
many thanks. :)

Family History Beginners Board / Look up for NSW Electoral rolls please
« on: Sunday 05 May 24 08:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am currently writing notes/story on my Irish convict ancestor James Egan. I am seeking info on NSW Electoral rolls, if someone has access to these?
I know James was working on a sheep/cattle Station "Kerribree" at Fords Bridge, NSW in 1903/04. I have also found a James Egan listed in 1913. Just wondering if someone can look into this please? If this is him, he would be 88 years old and after 1913, I would guess he was not around much longer. I cannot find any death info regards James. He was widowed for many years and lost his wide Sarah in 1865 and two babies also during the 1860's. James then fosters his 2 daughters and 2 sons (one son being my gr Grandfather) to families in the area where he was living in Victoria. At some point reunites with his eldest son in NSW, who was also named James Egan. Sadly this son dies aged 27 yrs and leaves a Will to convict James.
I know James was living at "Kerribree" Station. Fords Bridge due to the paperwork regards Will. Also listed at "Glenora" Station in the same area. I have looked on TROVE and also in the area of Fords Bridge and Bourke NSW and cannot locate a death. I am inclined to think he met with fate and went missing.
Cheers,
Lesley  - Australia.

Hi, thank you for replies. Yes, indeed this is my James Egan! I already have the 2nd report where he danced the jig and I have had this copy the last 2 yrs. He was quiet the comedian our James! This report had me in fits of laughter (and still does) I see that the other being shoplifting for his previous offences. James sounded like he wanted to be caught. I have been researching James for many yrs. Currently writing notes/story. James was sent to Van Diemens Land, now Tasmania. I have found quite alot over the years. Many thanks,
Lesley.

Hi! I am wondering if someone could look up Irish Prison records please and send a copy?
James Egan had 3 convictions. James is my 2x Gr Grandfather from Dublin. I know his final conviction was in 1843 and stole boots/shoes and was held in Kilmainham Gaol. I am looking for the other convictions, possibly pickpocketing and Newgate Prison Dublin.
Many thanks,
Lesley  Australia.

Hi to those who have posted on this family who are related and not related. I have sent some of this info to the person who is looking for his Mum via personal message. Here's a bit more for those who want to know more on the family regards Thomas and Elsie McGowan (nee Chape) married Walgett NSW 4th Jan 1946.
Elsie died 26/02/58 during child birth. After Elsie's death during childbirth (child was still born) Thomas hired a nanny to care for his children and despite this, sadly the children were removed by the General Minister from Thomas McGowan on 11th March 1960. The children were separated and never saw their father again.
Elsie's parent's Celia Nina Anne Chape died  1937 and Robert John Chape died 1949.
for those who are tracing the family of the following....James McGowan(Ireland - convict from Longford) and spouse Ellen Crampton (from Edinburgh Scotland) and one of their children
James McGowan and his de facto Eliza Weatherall. Please contact me via personal message and I can fill you in on  some of the BDM as passed on to me(please note I do not have all BDM info) and other info on the above names, such as our convict James from Ireland. However I cannot pass on other info  of living persons who have traced this tree who have posted on this message board.
My connection to this family is on my father's side Christian Edward Egan
My grandmother Mona Egan (nee Bradley)
My gr. grandmother Agnes Bradley (Nee MCGOWAN)
thank you
Emu ;D

Hi there....sorry ladies....I only just saw this message....didn't know it was there until my friend informed me! I have a fair bit on the McGowan family....not sure if I can give you what you are asking in regards the names in your posting (Elaine Joyce McGowan and others mentioned)I have been in contact with a McGowan relative whom I found on Rootschat in 2011. This lady has completed a fair bit of research on the family and lives nearby. We have met up a couple of years ago. I think she could be on holidays at the present time. Another lady did conduct research on behalf of her sister in law. I would have to look back at my notes and see what is mentioned as have not looked at anything in awhile. As mentioned in other postings my Gr Gr Grandfather  James McGowan was born in Longford Ireland and I have been to the place where he lived. I have also recently been to Sydney where he died near Darling Harbour.
cheers Emu :)
