Cheshire / Re: SNELSON/POWELL Families - for kathwc
« on: Wednesday 28 November 07 15:49 GMT (UK)  »
 :) Well JDGen,
I sent off for Samuel Snelsons will and discovered he was married twice.  First wife was Mary Atherton as stated, number 2 wife was Ann Astle, sister of Ralph Astle.  (I sent off for his will as well and this verified Samuel's and Ann's marriage.

Ann Astle has been linked up incorrectly in other family trees as being the wife of the son of Samuel Snelson (from Samuel's marriage to Mary).  Needless to say an interesting find.  However one thing leads to another.

Samuel and Ann had two children, Martha and George.  Martha married someone with the surname Moore, then a Thomas Williams, they lived mostly in Shropshire.  George married an lady called Ann Parsonage in 1845.  In 1851, Ann was staying with her Uncle John, taking one year old Mary Snelson with her.  George is staying with Martha and their family with his 5 year old son Samuel.  Ann remains in Cheshire with her family and according to the 1861 census she states she is a widow.  However, I can find no record of George's death, but he appears on the 1861 married?  to a Eliza and they have children.

He should have inherited his father's farmland on the death of his mother.  And until 1851 he has his occupation as a farmer, but by 1861 he is working for the railway.   The  census records show he gave conflicting places of birth, but the 1871 census gives his birth place as Tarvin, Cheshire.

I have someone who is going to look up parish records for me and I have sent of for some Birth and marriage records for George's family.  Do I have a bigamist in the family.  Apparantly quite a common occurence as peolpe didn't get divorces those days.

I will let you all know how this pans out.

Regards

Cornwall Completed Lookup Requests / Re: RICHARDS of Cornwall
« on: Wednesday 28 November 07 15:28 GMT (UK)  »
:) well people have sent in a request to CRO for some help.  Records at LDS Family History are the same as the IGI, so I have sent off for the microfiche.  That will take a few weeks.  In the meantime I am focusing my attention on my Cheshire and Lancashire ancestors who are also posing some problems.

Bit early bit Merry Christmas to you all and all the best for 2008!

Dear Kris,
Thank you for you advice and help on this.  I will definetly dig deeper and I will order the microfiche from the LDS, as like you said there are only the transcriptions to go on on the web.
I will keep you informed.

Dear Kris,
(Incidentaly, you have the same name as my son)

Yep there are problems.  My Solomon definetly "married" a Jennifer Hampton, and had children Solomon and Jennifer.   Jennifers'  father was Thomas Hampton.  All the information that I have states they were married in 1800, however, that could be wrong.  You know what the IGI is like (use with caution)

There seems to be a lot of Solomon Richards.  I think I will need to take a trip down to view the parish records (any excuse to visit Cornwall.

I have the Phillimore CD's, looks like I am going to have to take it slowly and view the whole lot.

Anyway thanks for looking.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Wilkinsons of Lancashire
« on: Saturday 10 November 07 19:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there people, Hope you are all having a good weekend.

Need help looking up Parish records.  I have a William Wilkinson married Ellen Naylor at St Peter's , Church Street. on 15 .03. 1836.

I have them  on the 1851 census lining in Shevington with Thomas and Ann Wilkinson, with their children Thomas (I have sent off for his Birth Cert) and Rebecca (I can't find her on the BMD).

I have also found on the IGI a John bpt sept 1839, James bpt Oct 1840 and died 1842 , Elizabeth Jane bpt. 1856, Mary Jane bpt 1854 ad Matthew bpt Dec 1852.  They all have a William Wilkinson and Ellen as parents and all bpt in Preston.

I have  found a similiar family in the 1841 census but the ages of William do not tally with the 1851 records.  They seem to disappear after 1851.

I am trying to link this family with my gr. gr. grandfather John Wilkinson.  There is a link with a Thomas  Wilkinson and Shevington, as John's daughter Julia was born there.

I would grateful if anyone has any ideas how to follow this through.

Thomas Wilkinson was from Oldha, abt 1781 and Ann b abt 1779 was from Scarrisbrick.

Many thanks
