Just got back from the church yard, sorry no fells at all though there were some good old gravestones from as early as 1830 in brilliant readable condition. I have also discoverd that jane fells did die in the retford union workhouse so at least we have cleared that up! Still lots of questions though
 ??? ??? ??? ???

hi again ,
forgot to say that retford was on the main route north and south and was a fairly major stopping off point which is why even today we have way more pubs/inns than would normally be the case for a town of this size. alot of the older pubs had stables etc for the horses and coaches so it may be possible the yard mentioned was part of a large coaching inn?

Hi, im still on the case also and about to go and see if i can find william fells or jane fells/riley gravestone.
The george inn yard is proving very elusive at the mo and certainly dosent exist now.. moorgate is a area within clarborough and was according to the census  near the retford union workhouse and spittle hill. Clarborough is in retford, nottinghamshire and is no where near nottingham. In fact we are closer to yorkshire so no point looking at pubs in nottingham. the retford union workhouse was in existance up until at least 1901 as jane riley/fells daughter in law and some of her children were there after the death of Edward Riley.
Also to add to the confusion regarding location moorgate is now considered to be part of retford and has been absorbed into the main town and isnt part of clarborough at all. Spittle hill or as it is now known spital hill runs into leverton road.
just trying to get as much info in as possible1 Fingers crossed i will find some more clues at th gaves stone, if its not been removed!

hi,
in 1881 jane fells/riley was living with edward riley and his family on east street, east retford but not sure where she was when she died. There were rileys from this family in the workhouse in 1901 though. william fells wasnt poverty stricken i dont think, he had listed living with him several servants over the years.

Nottinghamshire / Re: bearder family worksop nottinghamshire
« on: Friday 02 November 07 16:34 GMT (UK)  »
Thats the right family. Ive had a look through and frank bearder (transcribed bearden)married harriet simpson at worksop priory, fathers given as henry bearder and thomas simpson. it was witnessed by william frecknall and emma simpson. willaim Frecknall is the husband of ann franks 2nd wife! They are both listed as living on newgate street. This was on the 30 jan 1865. Just out of interest both harriet and the witness emma marked with a x.
The date in 1843 is the right henry. elizabeth would have been pregnant with ther 2nd child when he died and must have married a clark though i cant confirm that.
Frank married ann frecknall in 1897 ond in worksop. Ive been told that this at the time was not legal, does anyone know if it was illegal to marry your dead wifes sister?
Harriet bearder nee simpson died 1892 ond at the age of 46.
In 1841 census i have found 2 henry bearders both dobs 1821 both born in nottinghamshire and both married to ann. One is living on middle street in newark with ann 20, john bearder 15, joseph bearder 15 sarah bearder 55
The other is listed as being in mansfield again with a anne 20, elizth mellas 65 and samuel mellas 70.
Could this be the same henry bearder listed twice?
also to add to the confusion the beardr name is often mis spelt!
Any help would be much appreciated, Bearder is my mothrs maiden name so is a significant name in our family tree

Nottinghamshire / bearder family worksop nottinghamshire
« on: Friday 02 November 07 14:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hoping someone has more info on the bearder family of nottinghamshire, recent past worksop but maybe mansfield or sheffild if you go back.
Thomas Bearder b  1903 died 1966 married lucy mary riley father was
tom bearder b1874 died 1928 married mary ann (polly) ellis father was
frank bearder who married harriet simpson who died. He then married harriets sister ann frecknall (nee simpson)
I think franks dad was henry bearder who married elizabeth shaw in sheffield. she wasnt from sheffield so im wondering whether he did and after that i cant seem to find anything at all to connect him
would be great if i could fill in the gaps.
Diane.

Hi,
its kinda bugging me aswell because jane riley/fells is abit of a mystery also. Cant find a father/mother or marriage cert for 1st marriage, not even sure there was one!
On her marriage cert to william fells it states her fathers name as thomas seaman but the writing is very unclear so am not sure. There dosent seem to be a thomas seaman so am abit stumped.

these are all the fells from east retford + a few from worksop who died between 1775 and 1871

will keep looking. Very strange that there are no records of a william fells dieing that match with his birth year or any where near in the whole of england, not just nottinghamshire. Could his name have been misspelt?
