Derry (Londonderry) / Derry. Change of surname, why and how
« on: Tuesday 07 July 15 13:56 BST (UK)  »
My Great Grandfather Hugh Deery married his 2nd wife in St Columbas Long Tower. 1893 His surname Deery and Roman Catholic. His daughter born 1895 and registered Deery.
By 1901 census he had changed their surname to Adair and religion. Did he have to formerly need to do this e.g. By Deed Poll or would it have been informally. If formally where would it be recorded? Was there something going on locally in Derry that he believed he had to? Was it to improve his lot by not being Roman Catholic and having a name that was seen as non Catholic ? He moved from South of the river to the North of the river at Ballymagowan. Thank you.

Thank you Sandra and Shellyesq. I had never heard of these web sites. I am always amazed that when  I post queries on this site when I hit a brick wall that folk take the time out to help.
I will pay it forward.

What a quick response! Thank you so much for  Kingskerswell and Gaffy for your help. I have some spent hours trying to find it, I was wondering if the name had been changed as I was last there over 50 yrs ago. I now live in Australia so visiting there is very important. Thanks again.

I am trying to find Star of The Sea RC graveyard near the village of Eglinton. County Derry. I have done a number of searches and can't find it. I know that it is in the Parish of Faughanvale.
I am going in July to  Ireland and wish to visit my grandparents graves.
I can't find the graveyard on Google maps. I was there once as a young child and I have the plot numbers. I have also looked on History from Headstones.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for the information and I'll follow it up. I hadn't realised I posted on the wrong County. My family kept moving between the two! Cheers.

I have since followed your lead Elwyn and have found Gt Grandparents on my fathers side and lots more. It has become a goldmine of information. Thanks once again.

Tyrone / Lisnaskea R.C. Churches 1870
« on: Saturday 17 May 14 02:49 BST (UK)  »
I have found my Gt grandparents marriage in the IRELAND, Civil Registration index from the Family Search webpage. Their nearest Centre is too far away to travel to. I have tried Emerald Ancestors, Roots Ireland and they have no trace of the marriage online. I tried to order the certificate from PRONI but I need the name of the Church they were married in, I haven't a clue.
The information I have is Daniel Loughan married Margaret Maguire.  Registration district Lisnaskea registration Year 1870.
I know that a number of their children were born in the RC parish of Knockninny.
How many R.C. churches are in the Lisnaskea registration district or where could I find this out.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't seen any of the birth certificates but I had a Proffessional search carried out when I as trying to find Hugh's marriage. He reported that Hugh's occupation was Labourer on the marriage certificate and gave the names of the  children.
